I have had to tell them if they didn't get me 2500 a week I would go somewhere else. Over the last quarter I averaged just above that 2500 mile level.
glass freight slows in certain seasons, as most I haul, steel, lumber, aluminum and other. It is all still at the glass pay rate.
I had a $37.00 dollar check out of 52, I was screeming. But most are above $600.00 and quite a few 7,8,900 and a thousand. You just have to get pushy when the miles seem to drop below expectations.
Instead of outright refusing a load, tell them that load doesn't meet my mileage quota or finacial needs either get me something better or consider this my two week notice! Trust me, they don't want to lose drivers! As with all companies they lose their share. Hers a hint. I don't want to give away my cover so, when I started out and looked the first time in their Gary yard, that's where you can look at a printed seniority list, I was probably 2 months into my job. I was near 1569 out of about 1600.
I am now near 750 after almost a year.
Good luck -
oh ok thats how it goes -
WEll after reading all this Im a little scared to apply, I work at Georgia Pacific, in kansas and see the Maverick Trucks all the time, and was wanting to look into, but they only train new Drivers with no CDL in the Spec. division not sure if I want to go there or not!

Any updates on Maverick?
I am looking at applying to the flatbed division
Thanks -
Did you even bother to read what Hemroid wrote? 3 months ago he was 1500+ out of 1600 and he is now around 750. Hello??? Does that not tell you something? They lost more than half of there drivers. Bad company. Driver mill. Don't you think that you can do better?

Thats why I was asking for updates sometimes things change even for the better.
If I had any experiance I would be looking at a different route to take but I do not. I am going to have to got the route of a starter company for a year to beging with. I have read and read of these forums to try to make the best informed decision I can for me.
Everyone has been very helpful. -
Headed out. I see you are looking at the US div. That is the one that I am in. I am very happy with them. You are also from the buckeye, which is a good area for us. I del to Heath OH last week. Picked up in Columbus. Went to WV to do a trailer swap and went right back to OH to del then back to Columbus to del to AL. We run a lot of coils from Columbus to AL or MS, but there are a lot of other places that we del and pic in OH.
bduke said that they are a bad co and a driver mill. He asked if you thought you could do better? Just how long did he work for us? Oh, wait a minute I don't think he ever did.
The guys that have been complaining most have been in the glass div. That is where I read complaints on from the internet. I have never been in that div, but I have talked with a lot of them in that div and most seemed happy. I do know, but that they used to be snidey's div and that may be some of the problem. The other problem I have heard is that their trailers are old and I know that mav is buying new trailers for that div, but again I have never been in that div.
I can tell you that I have driven for a half dozen trucking co's since back in the 80's and maverick has been by far the best co. I make good money. Drive nice, well maintained equipment. Get home almost every weekend and they get me home for thanksgiving and christmas.
Bduke makes them sound like a driving mill. Then why are they so selective on who they hire? Yes; they will hire a brand new driver, but we also have a lot of older hands. One of our drivers has been flatbedding for over 40 years. Do you think he would still be at mav with that kind of exp if they were so bad?
I came in one weekend and found out I had a water leak. I had to tear out the bathroom floor and replace everything. I called mav. I was loaded with a del in chicago. They sent a empty trailer to my house and took my loaded trailer. I took a week off. How many co's would do that? I was also up on the MI line and the crane broke that was to load my coil. Could not get another load because of the holiday (thanksgiving was the next day) What did mav do? Told me to deadhead home empty. I live in West Ky and they paid me to come home empty so I could spend thanksgiving with my family. How many co's would do that? I was in dallas TX and found out that my daughter needed surgery for a broken leg. They also got me home in time for that.Headed Out, wb75, Big Duker and 1 other person Thank this. -
I was w/Mav for 2yrs. and saw my name hit about the halfway mark on senority list in flatbed div. Not getting into my personal story in this thread here's my advice.
-If your a rookie to the industry it's not a bad place to start.
-Take securement very seriously, and they are good at teaching it and helping you with it over the phone if you need it.
-Don't run yourself to hard, but realize it's a business and do what you can to comply with the companies needs, BUT also with your physical needs if your not comfortable- request more time (something that I should have done more often- which cost me safety points for little things like logging mistakes, or a scraped bumper- little more sleep, proably wouldn't have happened)
-Understand their safety point system and keep the points off your record, regardless of what their for- big deals or little ones
-be professional, yes sir, yes ma'm- to customers and Mav company people- this can be done and stand up for yourself if necessary at the same time (I never had a problem tho- to clarify- just saying always remaing prof.)
-If you damage something- report it, honesty is important- (i may have been to honest- but thats in my story)
-If it doesn't work out, move on
-Oh and I come from a hard labor college educated invironment, so I forget to say- you can't be a sissy about working- you'll be throwning 100 pound 8ft. drops tarps in all weather, day and night, hot and cold- (this is still the easiest physical job I've ever had- but some struggle with it)
-If it's windy- get out and help a fellow flabedder fold his tarps.
-You'll be fine there, and if it starts to look like you won't, look elsewhere
