I'll do some more testing tomorrow running from joplin to Houston hopfully I'll catch some guys with their radios on. I got out about 3 miles today before I changed the antenna and now that I know its tuned we shall see

The 5 foot top loaded whip should work decently.

I would have stuck with a 5ft but I drop down below ch. 1 often, or use to, and a 5ft wasn't broad banded enough. Leaving the SWR meter in all the time will most likely hurt your performance somewhat according to what I've always been told.

Ref. Hood's. Jim is a pretty good tech. He has been doing it his whole life, His Dad took care of all the business radios in the Springfield area years ago (including MHP) and Jim got started in radio early in life. Russ was impressed with his diagnostic abilities. He worked in Jim's shop there at Hood's for awhile until his shop in Arkansas became available again.

I've read it really won't make a difference if you leave the meter in line and I really wish I could have stayed at hoods a little longer and picked his brain

I've spent many an hour in Jim's shop before Russ came to town.

All I know about the "in-line" stuff is what those more knowledgeable have told me. You could always do your own test if you had somebody reliable on the other end and see for yourself. I did cable TV work for a while. You lose a little signal every time you cut the coax and install a splitter or something....makes sense when you think about it.

It does make sense but I wouldn't think it would be enough to really matter. By this meter I'm pushing 4.5 watts and I was told this radio was peaked at 5

First the radio being peaked and tuned has no effect on the swr , swr is the antenna and coax only it will be the same reading no matter what radio you hook to it. In fact most cb shops use a meter to test the swr without the radio even being hooked up.
And second a peaked and tuned cobra 29 should be pushing alot more than 4 watts hell most of them are hitting 6 or seven right out of the box

No matter what antenna you use, you're not going to see much more than 3-4 miles of range running mobile on flat terrain on CB frequencies, unless the band is open. I guarantee it. Save your time and money.
