It'll be your problem if someone ends up dead under your truck. The jury will certainly see it as your problem, even if it's not technically your fault. Remember, a "preventable accident" isn't always your fault. Just means it was preventable of you'd have done something different. I've read of guys spending time in prison for such. That'd suck. Going to jail for something that is "not my problem".

Never mind the possible legalities of it, I wouldn't want to have a fatality on my mind that could have been prevented.
An animal in the road is a different thing, I'd have no trouble in making hamburger out of it versus a shifted load or claim. -
I'll put 2 going one direction. And 1 in the middle going the opposite direction. Straps pulling from both sides help from shifting. But yours shifted from the opposite side of the strap pull. Even if you split and strap the teirs. I think you'd still end up with a shift. Them loads just flat out suck. You don't need a car to cause the problem. The curvy roads do that too.
I had one that shifted bad enough. I had to drop the trailer. Bring the truck from the side. Hook straps to the truck frame and pull the load back in to position. Luckily that load wasn't tarped. -

As has been said before by these FB guys, you can over-secure a load many times and spend the extra time, but you can under-secure it once, and lose all your time.
That didn't look like that bad of a shift, O/P ... bad enough to be concerned; i'm sure. Thanks for sharing. -

I had one like that a long time ago.
It was a load of steel plate. 6' wide sheets × 30' something long. It was some unbanded thinner stuff made into 5 or six layers with wood stickers.
I got lazy and only X chained the corners and used STRAPS on the center.
Everything was good when I fueled up at
Kadoka, Sd. Got to B.S.ING and running with a bull rack all the way down 73 and 20 to Lusk. This was the old road (rough, and side to side rock and roll)
Knew I was pushing it too hard keeping with him but did it anyway.
When I pulled the tarp off in Casper the sheets on the back where spread apart all the way to my chains on the corners.
Problem was the screw binder handles were facing in and had steel sheets on both sides. Fidel string tight and no way to loosen. I had to pull the cotter keys out and pound the pins out of the clevis on one side.
If it would have been straps only like a lot of guys do they would have been on the side of the road.
That thin plate would have cut them like a knife.
After that day I'm in the chain only group on steel.
Any extra straps I put on are for looks, It'll have enough chains to make the ride.Dominick253, SoDel, peterbilt_2005 and 3 others Thank this. -

When we haul concrete pipe we do what we can but sometimes the pipe just wants to go for a walk. Hauled some 24" pipe the other day and one walked about 3-4" on me. The scale was on the other side of the truck and not much you are going to do with a 1500 lb piece of concrete either. Scale was just before my exit too. When you are hauling 20-30 pipes on a load you do not have enough chains. BTW you must use chains on concrete pipe, straps are not allowed. The smaller the pipe the bigger the chance of them moving 12" is absolutely the worst.... LOL but the 48" I delivered today did not budge. Being 7k kinda helps.
The thing is, excrement happens, but on the bright side you had enough securement to keep the load on the trailer even though the load shifted.Dominick253, Chewy352 and G13Tomcat Thank this.
