great info O/P, from @old iron and @cnsper ~ I've done it a time or fifty ; i'll stick to my tanks. Lot of physics and common-sense going on all at once with those loads. More mental than many people think; physical too. If people think delivering "food" or "beverages" is hard, letem f/b for a week and they'll cower. LoL.

Is this personal? Company? Or FMCSA reg? I know it must be a chain or a cable for the longitudinal tie down... but other than that, I haven't seen any rules against straps...?
(not that I think straps on concrete pipe is a good idea

Not my preference. I do use straps and V boards but that is after everything is secured with chains to try and prevent the walking. Straight from FMCSA Driver's Handbook Chapter 7
Tiedown requirements (Section 3.5.5.2)
- Pipe many be secured individually or as a group.
- Tiedowns through the pipe must be chains.
- Front-to-back tiedowns may be chain or wire rope.

I used small car tires or cut tire pieces as chain protectors on concrete pipe.

Yep lol. I'm trying to avoid worse. If you've followed me on here you know I can't afford any incidents, tickets, anything negative. Mid may I'll have one year continuous otr. January I'll be 3 years post accident. I'm thinking about mbm in may. They're posting a 100% no touch freight position out 4 to 5 days home 2 days out of okc for about 6k a year.

Yep, I have read your post pretty much from when you came on here..
I will say you have listened to what some of the fine people here have suggested and to me, it seems you have grown in this period. Just like all of us even us hands that have been around while. We still learn and not afraid to ask questions or for help..

Some things just do not belong on a stepdeck or flat. I would not load something like that just because of where it sits on the outside of the deck. Steps and flats do not have the same strength on the edges as a RGN does. Heck, even a sliding axle trailer has more rail support than either of those two.RGN, Oxbow, Mudguppy and 1 other person Thank this. -
