I may have an answer for you? I have a friend that is part owner of a trucking company called United Transport. They mostly do reefers. I have hauled a few loads for them in the past hauling milk when grain hauling was slow. They lost the contract, and I asked them if there was any other work. They told me that they are looking for reefer drivers, but with my farming I can't go OTR. What he would more than likely do is give you a price per mile and let you use one of his trailers (he buys new trailers all the time). This is a good company, and they will treat you like family. I'd give them a buzz. http://unitedtransport.net/
Where can a lease or rent a 53 ft reefer trailer without 3 years business experience???

Some people obtain rentals because it allows for 100% write off from tax liability due to business structure. Also many small businesses don't want to tie up working capital in equipment purchases.
There are practically thousands of various business models out there that pertain to trucking around the world.
I agree about California. I look for used trucks from that state all the time!! -
