Averitt or Magnum

    I need some advice on these two company's. Both want to hire me once I graduatate school and both are in my top picks. The thing that concerns me with Averitt is they seem to have a lack of miles, I'm being told that the company avg is 2000mi per week which isn't much compared to Magnums 2500-3000 per week. I also have the potential to make a lot more money after six months with Magnum. And Averitt has an LTL division that I could move into if there was an opening. Which ever company I go to I intend to stay there for a year. So out of the two which would be best for a new driver?

    If recruiters are telling you about miles, I'd take that with a grain of salt. Best of luck to you.

    Amen to that! Go with Magnum Ltd. and you won't regret it.
    Averitt is a member of the 3-headed snake family; Averitt Express/First Fleet/First Express, and there's reasons drivers call it the 3-headed snake. First Express is the best of the bunch.

    Go with Magnum Ltd. or Abilene Motor Express if you want long runs and good paychecks.

    ^^^ YUP! ask @TROOPER to TRUCKER about Averitt. He really needs to lay his story out for all, but i'm sure he will chime in. DEF Magnum, even without his reply. I hear enough as is.

    I am out on workers comp with Averrit. A lot has went on with them but I will just say right now I would go with Magnum and would not even consider Averitt. That is my take on it.

    Any opinions on LTL with Averrit? Just curious, they seem like they need people for day cab work by me at decent pay. @TROOPER to TRUCKER

    You will get home every night. Pays way more than OTR but it depends on your hours and job that dictates exact pay.

    OTR miles at Averitt depend greatly on the Service Center (terminal) you are based out of. Nashville OTR miles are low because they have too many OTR drivers based there. Other Terminals are 3k week. I hear good things about Atlanta and a few others. Ask for a current OTR driver from the terminal you would work out of to call you.

    Averitt's Shuttle (LTL) is very hard to get into. I've been trying for years. It pays very well so every OTR driver is trying to get into it. Averitt is a good company if you are essentially a Boy Scout. Their rules are reasonable but enforced. Good benefits, stable company. But you WILL work by their rules or leave.

    I work at Magnum LTD. The miles CAN be very good, but the first couple of months you'll be doing 2k or so a week. We deliver a LOT of freight to Atlanta, so home time won't be an issue for you. I had a very rough first two months. partly due to starting at the worst possible time of year (Dec 18) and partly due to just not knowing how to work the system. It got a lot better month 3, and the last 2 months it's been great.

    You can make up to 49 CPM here and 44-47 shouldn't be a problem after your first quarter.

    Equipment is awesome. (Pete 579s, APU and 1800-winverter, and the oldest trailers we HAVE are 2014s.) Maintenance is good, dispatch is better than average, and ZERO micromanagement. Fuel at any pilot/Hook, when and how much you want. Out of route is a non-issue unless you start going 20%+ over practical on a regular basis. Hometime, you can take every 10 days if you want. That affects your monthly miles, which will affect your bonus pay. Most guys stay out 14-30 days then take 2-7 days off.

    I tend to stay out 6-8 weeks at a shot, but I don't have a wife and kids waiting for me. Pretty much, as long as they continue to get me the miles, I'll never leave for another OTR job. Since I got my performance pay increase I'm averaging about 1400-1500 per week gross. Insurance is comparatively cheap.

    The training program is also better than average, though it pays rotten for (as a new guy out of school) 4 weeks. $75 a day.
