Most cities have natural shops that make dog food and it's healthy. We have one in St. George and Lost Wages. It makes a whole lotta difference for ours.

Did not mean to derail your thread Stan. Just used to watch ads, buy bag that was on sale or or had the best picture on the front of it years ago. Never even thought to check the ingredients or company reputation. I mean, who could or would blank up dog food? Then the dog that is in my avatar started having issues & they were food related. Vet bills added up along with the prednisone meds really messed with her. She was spoiled rotten aside from buying the wrong food. The brand then was Authority sold at Petsmart. That was 10-15 yrs ago, but may as well been feeding her flavored cardboard.
The only other note I can add is check the protein numbers listed on a bag. There is a big difference between the brands. Holistic foods are well intended. But since there is not a set standard or legal definition to hold a mfg accountable, it is not relevant. That is where company reputation begins to matter.
Now get back to posting photos of your girl.KANSAS TRANSIT, taxihacker66 and brian991219 Thank this. -
Your fine Brad, I appreciate the info, I have been checking labels, but what I don't understand is some of the ratings, the purina I am feeding her now has almost identical numbers to a top shelf brand, but yet one has 1.5 starts and the other has 4 starts???
I have been looking pretty hard at the Diamond brand for large breed puppies, seems like good numbers at a decent price point, just hate to buy a 20 bag is she doesn't like it.LBZ Thanks this. -
Doubtful she'll reject the food, but if she does the fastest cure is a raw egg on top/stirred in. Researched a brand years ago & I thought it was great, at least in print. The dogs, not so much. That brand was Canidae & has mostly disappeared from the shelves around here in the past couple years. Apparently there were more than my two that were not fans.KANSAS TRANSIT Thanks this. -
Stan, Try and find one brand she likes and stick to that brand.
My last 2 dogs would get the runs real bad if I switched brands.
Years ago with my first dog, I had my mom pickup dog food as she was going to the store for shopping.. I tell her the brand and protein rating. Got it, yep I know.. Well she comes back with a cheap brand and meal style too boot. My Lab. would not eat it.. I tried for 2 days.. So 50 pounds of dog food wasted..
I asked my Mom, why did you get that brand when I told you what to get.. It was cheaper.. Ok what about my change back from the money I gave you.. Oh.. gas money.....KANSAS TRANSIT Thanks this. -
When switching brands of dog food it's recommended that you mix half of the new brand with half of the old brand for a week. This should allow your dog to get use to the new brand with no diarrhea.

After a lot of research, (thanks for that link Brad) and of course seeing just what was available in my area, I settled on Diamond brand for Large Breed Puppies, it is not the most expensive brand but is substantially higher than Purina, she likes it and the number of ingredients all add up and I have read some good reviews on it, so far so good, only bad thing was that it is only handled a Orschleins in my area, and of course they only stock the 40 lb bag, so it was a crap shoot, but it all worked out.
