Need a cheap truck to haul reefer out and back to Florida.
Needs opinion on those 2 options:
01 Classic XL - 500 N14+ about 1,1mil miles. Minor engine work done but no rebuilt. 13spd original not touched. Clutch replaced about 100k ago. Runs Strong. $15k
00 Pete 379 - 525 N14+ about 1mil miles. No engine work. 18spd rebuilt and rears redone. Runs Strong. Asking about $35k
Both will need little TLC. Driver will drive it (good guy knows how to take care of it). Both have rubbers in same shape. Is it worth paying extra for pete? Is it worth going with 2000 to avoid Elogs?
Main thing here is cost to run and not looks or comfort. Can rebuild the motor in about a year or 2.
Appreciate your opinion
379 vs Classic XL

If cost to run is the important thing I would look at more aerodynamic trucks then the 2 you listed especially if you're not going to to be driving the truck you can get a aero truck a lot cheaper then a hood and it's cheaper to run
-
You are not going to get anything cheaper than 15k if its running and is not junk. Man, I did not know that old Petes are so expensive
-
What would you recommend? I don't want anything newer then 2003 - no egr, no emission, no problems
-
Freightliner century or Columbia are probably the most common out there
-
Agree but also a throw away truck. I figured I better bu something that is well put together so later I can rebuild motor, tranny and rears and keep it going.
-
If you have a good driver lined up I'd ask him. Probably gonna be pretty hard to find a good driver willing to drive a 15 year old or older freightliner century or Columbia unless you are paying big big bucks to driver. Just my opinion tho.
-
i agree that they are pretty much throw away trucks but will probably make you more money my truck is a turned up 600 w900 with a 290 wb but I'm the one driving it if I was hiring a driver to run a truck for me I could buy 4 century's for what my kenworth cost and still be money ahead

Based purely on what you've told us: Is spending $20k more to get a rebuilt transmission and diffs worth it to you? At over 1 million on the clock without a rebuild I think you'll be looking at major engine work in the near future.

2000 year will be still Elog, must be 1999 to avoid.
