Hello,
We are trying to find the most cost effective way to move a lot of household. Pods online recommendation for the move, not including barn stuff was to rent 5 pods. I'm wondering if buying our own retired shipping container, loading it ourselves, and hiring a driver/rig to haul it is feasible.
Please let me know what you think. I would have no way of vetting a driver, so how do I do that? How do I arrange to hire out and be protected from the various evils that might befall our belongings?
Thank you very much.
Realistic? Buy Container, Load Household, Pay Someone to Drive 2800 mi.

Ok, so you get the container all packed up.
You would be the one's to make sure it's packed right.. Any damage inside will be on you, even with pods setup
Then how are you going to get it lded. on the flat bed or step deck? you got a crane handy or a big forklift that can handle the weight..
Then you can call different flatbed companies and get a rate.
Now will that trk. and trl. be able to get to your new home with out wiping out any light poles. Can they make the turn..
You might want to study on hey," Honey I got a great idea.."
Or you can post the container on" you ship" and then wonder if it will make it or not, by using a hauler who might not even be legal..
Do you want me to keep goingcrb, Ruthless, IndigoBunting and 1 other person Thank this. -
In a nutshell call a reputable household moving company. You'll save money when all is said and done. Also that "retired" container was retired for a reasion. Companies don't buy a new one just because.

Old Dominion might be a better setup, they used to just drop 28ft pups and let you load them. There is no "cheap option" on a 2800mile move... You could reach out to Uhaul/Penske/Ryder and see if they have any 1 way deals from your current area to where you are moving, sometimes they need to move around trucks and offer really low rates.

Sell everything that cannot fit in a car, then buy new when you get to your new house. Easy peasy.

Yup, that's what I thought. Just trying to figure out a way to make a massive move...
Thanks!!!

I also toyed around with renting with Ryder, but since I don't have a DOT number and have no idea how to make a load legal decided against trying to drive it myself. (former company driver)
Thank you for your input. I am thinking the Pod route will be best at this juncture.Dominick253 Thanks this. -
Yea, but here is the bad thing about the Pods deal..
Did it show you the costs to have them moved?
I checked on it about a year and a half ago. I got some things I need to move from Oh. to Ia. right at the Il. line.. Flippen haul rate was stupid.. Then they put them on companies like C.R. England or NFI and the likes.. Do you trust 90 wonders hauling your stuff??? -
Mayflower also will drop a household goods trailer for you to load, and leave it at your new house for a day or two to unload. Can't imagine them running for under 2.50 a mile though.

You dont need a DOT number to rent a 26' Ryder van. Like others said though if you have a lot of stuff it may be just easier to pay someone to come and get it.Cetane+ Thanks this.
