I will call them later today as a dispatcher ask for a job and see what percentage of skimmed money they offer me....

Thats BS. Any company can be shorting him and holding back money.
Its kind of funny that Van is doing better in Chicago than other parts of the country. I do stepdeck and my carrier is based out of the Chicagoland area and he keeps me out of there because of the poor rates.
I am still averaging above $2mi and thats running mainly off the loadboards. So if you follow that,.. then you know how difficult it can be to stay profitable off the boards.
Wish I could help the OP,.. I am not very familiar with Van rates. But I can say this,.. rates are still down compared to 2 yrs ago.
Jumping ship may or may not work in your husbands favor. Ideally if I were in his shoes and wanted to continue with Van freight,.. I would talk with O/O's and try to feel them out at truck stops to find out what they are running for.
Have to be very careful though,.. because many people lie about what they make. I have had guys tell me they refuse to run for under $5 mi. Yet I'm looking at a beat up old Century that makes my old Columbia look like a show queen and he was pulling a worn out old Schneider trailer and the O/O looked like he fell out of a dumpster. Its difficult to find an honest person any more.
For me,.. I found that in order to remain profitable off the boards I have to stay out away from home longer than I honestly want to be. I hustle and bounce from one load to another and do my best to stay in good freight lanes. What I do is different than Van freight. My truck is paid for, my trailer will be paid off in June,.. my operating costs are minimal. I can survive running as cheap as $1.30 - $1.40.

Maybe he should become a lease operator, from what I read on here that's the hot ticket from the guys who have done it. lol
They post on here how they're making bank and driving a brand-new Cascadia to boot!BigT13, Jonkie, HalpinUout and 1 other person Thank this. -
I called and they said they are not looking for new dispatchers... Did not even ask about experience or accounts that I am working with.... What if I had loads leaving chicago daily? The manager didnt ask any other questions other than they are not looking for a dispatcher any more... Looks like a bad sign considering owner should not be making less money than a company driver... They do not care about their owner ops... They said they have company drivers thats what they are focusing on making money... All they want is that % from your husband

Thats why I love my wife. She will come out and spend the summer with me and see exactly what I do and how things work. She has grumbled when I take a low rate load. But she knows why and understands we do things to survive. Sometimes you have to walk in some old boots a little longer in order to be able to afford some new boots.
