I think now they are owned by Gordon Trucking. It may be a good deal, they go out west a lot. More so than just your regular OTR co.'s.

 

Heartland bought out Gordon, lock stock and barrel a few years ago. Was not a merger lol. Was a purchase. They did take on quite a bit of their staff, and the Kids of the old Gordon owners are middle management, but that was part of the purchase agreement.
Gordon was purchased to give Heartland a full 48 state coverage, since before that Heartland focused east of the Rocky's, and Gordon was mostly in the West. I am pretty sure they have even paid off the one loan they took out and are totally debt free again.

 

I cannot say how they are now, I moved on a little over 2 years ago now, so my info would be old. Allot depends on what terminal you are out of, since pay and dispatch is all regional. Your best bet is to ask drivers you see at shippers and receivers in areas that you want to run.

 

I'm a current driver, depends on what you are looking for in a company. The heartland side of the company stays east of the Rockies. A "system" driver runs anything in that area, regional drivers area depends on the region they choose. I run Midwest regional. I get home most weekends but, loads determine when and for how long. If you take time off (more than 3 days) you have to turn in your truck at a terminal, and possibly get a different truck when you return. From what I'm told after 10 years or 1 million miles you get to keep your truck. Like all companies there are things you won't like, think about what you do and don't like and talk to some drivers before you hire on. The red trucks are trainer trucks, so I would advise talking to guys in the white trucks for more realistic info. BTW Heartland bought Gordon and is currently transitioning to all Heartland with a dry van and a refer division.

 

Considering taking a salary position out of columbus.
What are the main customers?
Mostly drop and hook?
Driver unloads?

 

Could be one of several. Sears, Whirlpool, and fedex are the ones that come to mind first. I pulled Sears and Whirlpool out most of the time, then did a loop back. They have a bunch of fedex air lanes they do salary for also though. The western leg is hard to get onto, but the ones running east are pretty open, especially dulles, since nobody wants to sit at the airport that long. I am assuming you live in Columbus, if not I could probably give you a better guess on the lane.

These are all drop and hook in Columbus, then most are live unload, unless you are swapping the load out with another driver. No driver unload.

I was salary out of Columbus for several years. The pay is salary or miles, whichever is higher. Truck has to make revenue first, but that is almost always a given. Salary drivers are not allowed to SIT, you are priority, since you are getting paid no matter what 95% of the time.

 

Looking at Heartland myself. Working the 11 western home 3 weekends a month. Any info on how accurate the claims are? Don't really care about hometime much but it is nice. I have run 3 months out 1 week home for the last 2 years so anytime home more than that is nice. They offered 41cpm which is a little better than I make now. What I am interested in is the equipment, I have always had apu and at least 1000 watt invertor. What do the trucks have if anything?
