do you go to overnite terminals?

estes has a truckload division, which is seperate...but i have seen a trailer
or 2 on some LTL lots

 

I know there is a change going on because UPS bought us. And many are afraid and want blue and gray or die. But I have had eleven good years with Overnite making excellent money and benefits. I made 63k last year doing line haul. I was home daily except for a few runs I did to Gaffney, SC in which I stayed at a bunkhouse at the facility. I think all in all with the money UPS has, it will make this a larger, better company. The only thing negative is that some "barns" are union. Sometimes that works for you or against you. You need to have a HAZMAT to drive here.

 

as i may have mentioned in another one of your posts, or perhaps the PM i sent you, i do believe that eventually ALL overnite barns will be unionized, take it or we'll just close up the barn will be the ultimatum, from ups. with so many trucking companies so close to one another (in area) i wouldn't be too surprised if there is a ups hub or terminal close to your particular barn. this being said, ups can easily close that barn, and work out of their place, by simply adding onto the building, or shifting things around the current building. i worked for a union shop, did i like it....?? well, sometimes yes, sometimes no. i always felt the union was "in bed" with the company as it always seemed we couldn't get get things cleared up or followed by contract. seemed like the company was always able to "circumvent" the contract, just enough so that the union would say "its the company's dispatching requirements" that allow for this to happen. an example, i had a "bid run", i was called by dispatch over the nextel, and told to go to the philly terminal instead of the new jersey terminal (my run). i refused, as the philly driver was available and at the starting point. why have me do his run? i was a senior driver, he was 6 drivers below me. then dispatch said i had to be in philly before 2 am, or no possible trip home. i was home everyday, no exceptions, no layovers, period.......... they (dispatch) said to go to philly, i turned that truck around, drove it back to my terminal, and went home "sick". i got suspended, the union got me back to work. the terminal manager wanted me fired, the union said no, the suspension was enough.

why didn't the union stand up for me "before" my suspension, "before" my change in dispatch? i don't know, except, i think, they are in "bed" with the company.

 

I drive for UPS as a package driver and UPS does not want UPS freight to go union. That is very clear.

2nd UPS can't move any freight operations to its package centers. If you understand our union contract then anything moved to a union center becomes unionize and subject to our contract. Also, package centers aren't set up for moving freight. Cheaper to leave exsisting Overnite sites. If UPS freight goes union their employees will have to vote it in.

 

hmmm.......i find it hard to believe that UPS will not unionize Overnite, since so many barns are indeed union, and teamsters too, right..?? still though, UPS can close barns that are not showing a profit or not working "up to par" to UPS's standards. it would be very interesting to watch this over the next 2-4 years. money/profits/expenses/and lost profits will dictate to the bean counters what happens to Overnite barns.

geesh..........i thought that UPS and the teamsters were pretty good to each other. oh well, only time will tell..........thanks for the added info on the union situation.

 

Just curious, which Ovnt barns are Union?
