I got a offer from my mechanic to take off my stock turbo and go with BorgWarner. He has two type s400 171702 and sx400sx4. He says sx4 is a higher quality turbo price is only 100$ more for sx4 which is 700$ and 600 for the s400. What is the difference between the two and is sx4 worth it?
s400sx4 vs s400

What turbo is on it now, Whats going wrong with turbo you have on your truck now?
ExOTR Thanks this. -
You can't just slap on a new turbo and go, you'll need to reflash and likely pay for some dynotime to work out the kinks.
-
What kinks lmao!!
It'll be fine. Put on the 171702 and enjoy.
I hope your 12.7 is at least 500 hp thou, it will work with that turbo better.
Or better yet get your ecm tuned and you'll really have a nice setup -
Oh my...
Not all the new SX4 turbos have the 96/88mm turbine and that is a requirement since there aren't any of the performance aftermarket turbos available with it. Be sure of what you are buying. -
I don't think there's a difference.sx4 defines the exhaust size. I think he's confused. Go with the 171702 for anything larger than 430 horse and 171701 for lower hp and 11.1 applications.

need a good 500 hp for the 171702 under that the 171701
-
There is one SX4 s400 that has a 83/74mm turbine in BWs catalogue that has the same compressor as the 171702.

I searched online and there is SX4 still don't know the difference. My 12.7 is capped stock at 430hp i can have it set up to 500 but don't think i will it pulls grate for me never had problems i will be getting bully dog manifold for turbo to go with and straight flow exhaust

On a DDEC IV S60, yes you can. I replaced the stock waste gate turbo on my reman 500HP S60 before it got dropped in my glider with a BW 171702. No need to play with the ECM or dyno it up. It is just a simple bolt up change. 530K miles on the engine now, same turbo. I even put a turbo blanket on the turbo when we put it on, and did a ceramic exhaust manifold. I can pull quite well and EGT's rarely go over 900F on a hard pull. Haven't seen the need to go with a higher priced BW SX4 version.
For the 430 HP engine, it was said right... go with a 171701 for that one.
