My wife got her cdl through Houston Community College. She is having a hard time finding a local job. She has a phone interview tomorrow with United Rentals. What are some things she can say to get to the next level in the hiring process?
Just trying to brainstorm to give her as much material to use.

She should consider applying for and accepting a job that most other drivers aren't interested in taking. It might involve crappy pay, or crappy hours, or hot/cold and dirty work but she'll get her foot in the door. After a year or so keeping her nose clean, she should be able to write her own ticket.

Years ago, I was building a pair of houses. A female electrician and a couple of female painters came in to bid on work. They gave good bids and so I gave them the jobs. First thing out of the painters mouths was how they expected me to provide labor to carry the 5 gallon buckets. They also expected me to set up and provide scaffolding because they did not do ladders. I laughed out loud. Painters who didn't do ladders is like a flatbedder who refuses to drag chains. Have you ever seen a painter that didn't have a stack of ladder? I opened the door of the house and told them to get out.
The electrician on the other hand was A typical electician. Had all the tools, strong hands. Even had her own ladders. She did good work.
United Rentals is open deck work. No offense to women anywhere, but a woman would have to prove to me that she could do the job. I'm not hiring a woman that's expecting me to go easy on her because she's a woman.
So if a woman was trying to market herself as an open deck driver, I would be skeptical. But if she called me out and said, "Sir, give me a chance to prove myself on the yard, and she had her boots on and gloves on, and she was standing at the door, I would follow her to the yard.
If she could drive and she could drag chains, I would give her a shot. Show me that you're willing to work, get dirty and learn, I will give you a shot. But if I got the feeling that you're going to try to use the old feminine wiles to get someone else to do your work, I will launch you off my property. I don't need drama, I need a solid driver. Doesn't matter if it's a male or female. But try to play the female card, and I will throw you off the property like A Randy Johnson fastball.
"Six, you're kinda rough on women drivers."
I am real simple. I am an equal opportunity A Hole. I hate everyone. So keep your business YOUR business. Bring it to the job, you're fired. Want to be gay? Be gay on your own time, not on my time. You think black lives matter? They do...but not while you're on my clock. You are woman, hear you roar? Not in my truck. You're just another driver. Do what you are paid to do. Leave everything else at home and we won't have a problem. That includes family issues, fetishes, whatever.
Anyways, Mac. Have her get in the car and knock on doors. Makes a much better statement than the phone calls. If I received a phone call from a woman asking about a driving job, my first thought would be that she's like a lot of the women posters that come in the rookie section of TTR asking questions about jobs for their husbands because ol hubby is too brainless or lacks the initiative to do his own thing. So I wouldn't really look at whatever application she filled out. But if she showed up in person, then it would click in my mind that she's the one wanting the job. I dont think there is really anything she can say to make a difference besides the usual politeness.
Trucking and construction are very similar in the type of skill sets and the way people observe the people they hire. Her demeanor and self confidence will probably be the most crucial points of interest in getting a serious consideration.
I mean.. after 15 yrs in construction.. you could tell inside of 5 mins if someone was going to work out or not.
