I suspect a stock Cobra 29 will outperform the one with the "stage 2" modification. It's definitely worth trying a stock radio before you allow someone to tamper with it and see how it compares to the other one.

Just wondering what the heck is a stage 2 mod or tune?
I know what it is in the car world but never heard of that in the cb world.rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
I just want to add that I'm glad I stuck around long enough to learn that everything said here is true. And the combined knowledge of the frequent posters on this board is a great resource to tap into. Thanks guys.TheDude1969 and darthanubis Thank this.

Well, after much deliberation i did a whole new setup. Went with a Top Gun Quad 5 10 meter radio. I did export mod and some tuning along with echo set mod. It is running about 70 watts with full audio swing on RK56 mic. Also did new coax, a few ground straps and new browning antenna. Currently have an SWR of 1.2. The receive on this radio is just awesome. I find myself picking up clear transmissions that i can not reach. Will most likely be looking to up the power to 150 - 200 watts in near future.

The bearcat is really good

I wonder how the receive compares to that in the Stryker 955.darthanubis Thanks this.

Congratulations on your purchase hope you like it so far, have to ask though what shop did the tuneup? Just wondering how they were able to squeeze 70 watts PEP out of a dual final radio whos own website says 12 watt carrier 50 watt pep hope they have a happy meter and they didnt clip and spread to achieve the 70 watts PEP. Just like the cb shop in Whiteland In boasting on the radio how he can get 50watts out of a Cobra 29 with mosfet upgrade yet I could barely hear him 5 miles away, yet with the same radio you just bought I could hear Bobs cb 20 miles away in the hilly terrain on I 80 in PA.

could it depend on antenna.
-
Pretty much it always depends on the antenna. Wasting money on a rig for hundreds seems to give satisfaction that the radio looks or acts great but reality is that it isn't the radio, but the antenna that matters.Evvy Thomas and darthanubis Thank this.

I guess the point I was trying to make is simple, there is just too many false claims, too much exageration, and these cb shops all think that we are all just a bunch of stupid idiots that will believe anything we are told, because they know everthing and we know nothing, well the more we educate ourselves we will avoid the ripoff artists and only give our business to the honest ones. Now to change gears, hey slw206 you stated the receive is excellent with that radio, is it as good or better than the Bearcat 980? Just curious. One more thing I just had my Galaxy 99v2 tuned correctly by Clays CB shop , and come to find out Mesas in wildwood removed the limiter, so Robert at Clays put it back in and aligned transmit and receive, good thing I used it rarely in my pickup truck and didnt fry anything, kudos to Clays.
darthanubis Thanks this.
