First.. The radio was purchased from and tuned at Bobs CB exit 70 I-80 PA. The shop is regarded as one of the best CB chops (rated by truckers).
Yes, the receive is far superior compared to my 980 (stock) and my 29 (stage 2 T&P). I had a friend run out in his jeep 5, 10, and 15 miles. He runs a galaxy he claims has a 50w kicker. At 5 miles we could talk back and forth easily with the 980 being the weakest receive for him. I picked him up clearly with the 980, 29, and quad 5. At 10 miles he could no longer pick up my 980 but could pick up my 29 and quad 5. All 3 radio received him but with the 29 and 980 i had to turn up the RF gain pretty high which resulted in alot of noise and static. With the quad 5 i picked him with RF gain set well below 50% and no noise/static. At 15 miles the 29 and 980 could not pick his radio up even with RF gain up all the way. The quad 5 still picked him up though i did have the RF gain up high enough so i was picking up static/noise. He could hear me transmit also. I realize this was not a scientific test but it did show the quad 5 transmitted and received better than the other 2 radios in real world scenarios. This test was conducted in western PA just south of I-80 so the hills did limit us some.

Hardrive has a video or two of a quad 5 shooting skip from his shop. Search 'fine tune cb' on YouTube if your interested.

Good deal like I said before I heard him at mm 50 talking on that same radio and he is at the 70, enjoy.

The BC980 actually has an excellent receiver. For whatever reason (probably FCC ########) the factory detunes the hell out of it. Get it to someone who can really tune a receiver and it's a hell of a radio.

I agree Volvo, that has been my experience the 980 receives better than my 29( stock) or 99v2. I bought mine from amazon and nobody has touched it, but like I stated on another post, stuff is provided to amazon by various cb shop and electronic outlets, so Im wondering if it was tuned before being sent to amazon.

In addition the 980 sometimes borders on the oversensitive in regard to the receive, but if I lower rf gain to level 3 or 4 ( 5 being max) and activate the local filter, which is probably similar to high cut on other Unidens, it reduces the unwanted hiss but still allows far off signals to be heard.

I dont get chance to check out those cb shops because I run night time. Do you think it worth modding cobra 25LTD classic.

What kind of mod ? You referring to a basic peak and tune, swing kit, mosfet final upgrade, rfx 75 or something else you have heard about. Anything other than a good peak and tune my guess is most individuals on this forum are going to say no.
