Hey gang, I recently moved to California and was hoping to get out of trucking, but there's no work and it turns out the private sector doesn't ACTUALLY like veterans. That being said I'm going to change over my Class A to California as it seems like most companies require you to do it before they'll hire you. What's required? I've heard horror stories about them making you take your normal driver's license test all over again as well as the entire written test as well and if you don't pass them both they pull your license. Is this bs or what? Has anyone out there done this recently that could talk me off the ledge?

Everything I've read says as long as your CDL is current and valid you will only be required to take all the written tests. No pre-trip or driving. This includes the tests for any and all endorsements you have and the test for a regular Class D license, plus the general knowledge/air brakes/combination vehicles. A long form copy of your medical card is also requiredm

California? Pray TELL WHY? What has the rest of us done to you to make you consider such a move when millions are fleeing east?

You say you are a Vet, first off thank you for your service! Second, join up with a State Government or even a Federal Government. Any number of contractors might take you on. But California!? Oy!

Third, you are allowed only the one CDL. It's across all State Lines and if you do move into a new home in California you should be able to turn in the old State issued CDL from wherever you came from and get issued a new CDL from California.

Whatever you do, do not, I repeat do not have more than one license on you, around you or at home or whatever out there. You are allowed just the one, the CDL in this case. Another poster has already written to lay out what you will expect to do in order to get it transferred into California.

There is one thing I think is rather new, the Medical Certificate. You need to have a active one within the last 6 months that goes with the CDL for Tier One. If you cannot hold or keep a valid medical cert, then you will probably be assigned to Tier II when you renew your CDL.

T1 for those who don't know includes several classes of trucking such as over the road interstate commerce. T2 is a sort of a reserve list for purposes of say a National Emergency and hauling reefer loads of dead bodies out of a nuclear zone or something for disposal would be the ones called up at that time.

I imagine it like that. Op comes to a place and is trying to get hired. He says "I AM VETERAN" and that does not help him to get hired. OP's verdict: California's private sector does not like VETERANS!

Actually I'm speaking in general. As in EVERYWHERE. people ask if you are a veteran offering "veteran's preference" and it doesn't do anything. Thanks for the venom though, glad to see there's such a great support network everywhere!!

@bubba455 there are organizations that help veterans find job for free I would suggest looking into that
