I ran for a company in the 80's that had 7 speed and 10 speed directs with 3.55's. But then again back in the day. Even the interstates were 55 MPH.

Looked at the truck again today. Turn the key on and the oil gauge is sitting on 60 lbs. Start it up drops to 0 then back to 60 lbs. Give the engine some fuel and the needle did move a hair. Wondering if the gauge is not right?Or is Volvo gauges like that?
Also last week we ran the truck 5 miles down the road and back, it still held 60 lbs of oil pressure. He also has a Volvo 780 2007 model on its way in. It has a Volvo D12 engine and a 13 speed. Wife likes the ideal of the work station in the back. But I'm not sold on the extra weight. And plus the 99 model has the 12.7 DDEC IV in it. And I do like the 12.7's. Buddy of mine that has worked on the Volvos in there fleet. Told me if I found a truck with the D12 in it. That was his favorite engine after the 12.7. And he could tune it where the engine would run and last without issues with the EGR coolers and stuff.
Checked the brakes out today on the 1999. Shoes are 70% or so drums looked good also. Cable is broken on the hood latch. Windshield will need replacing soon. It has a crack starting on pass side. Needs a good cleaning inside but most all the dash is in good shape. One part is cracked, but he has a wrecked truck on the yard that has the same piece.
I'm thinking the 99 is the right truck. Less stuff to go wrong, put $10,000 into it. And have a truck that will run a long time. And part of that $10,000 would be replacing stuff that would or could cause issues down the road. I for one would rather replace items that are prone to going out. Then having them go out later on.

This is probably comparing apples to oranges but my 2005 Volvo has the D12 and my oil gauge reads around 30 when sitting at idle and 60 when you give it fuel. I don't know if the 12.7 should do that too or if it's normal to do what yours is doing. Hopefully someone with a 12.7 will chime in. Hood cable is not too difficult to fix. OTR Performance is a good source for Volvo parts and great how-to videos. I think they have a hood cable listed.

And, speaking of singling out a Volvo to make a RV hauler out of it, have you ever seen the rvhaulers.ca website? You have to check it out, if you haven't. He has some great videos. That guy is a mad genius when it comes to turning a Volvo into a RV hauler.

Yes I have seen Greg's site. Mine will be to move RVs and trailers for a 2 years. Then retire it with us and use to pull our 41ft 5th wheel camper across the country

Buy it. (The Detroit motor) All used trucks are gonna require some work. Don't sweat it.

I have a 98 with a Detroit and super 10. It's a great truck. Coming up on a million miles and showing no signs of needing an inframe. IMO you'll go broke hauling RVs but as far as having it to pull your own around it sounds like you found the perfect truck for it with the 2.79's.

Oh and btw my oil pressure gauge started doing the exact same thing a few months ago just before I parked it, either reads 60 or 0 and will switch back and forth. It pretty much has to be the sender.

For me the Rv's will be more of a back haul. Have stuff going that way, and being the RV's that come back. Will be for me a back haul. Plus will only be around 30 trips per year with the RV's tied into the hauls.
Plus the Start of 2018. It would be tagged and Titled as a RV. Then be used for our use only. I agree if one had to depend on RVs full time. There,s no way I would go that route.
I have a 2005 Chevy Kodak custom build now. Love the truck but can't keep the water Temps down. So unless the next try fixes that. Someone else will be owning it. Funny after driving OTR for years. Its going to be nice to run a truck for fun in a few years. Plus I can get in my Pickup or the Kodiak. 6 hours is rough on me. But a Semi 10 hours is like 3 in a pickup.

I agree, I put 200k miles on a Dodge 3500 and after getting in the Volvo I realized that I will never give up air ride! Drive 700 miles straight home and get out and am ready to go out to dinner or whatever instead of needing to rest my back lol.

If you get the Volvo make it a plan to replace the turbo and manifold. I have a Borg Warner 171702 and a walker straight through muffler and it sounds great and gives great fuel mileage. Decent power also even though mine was still factory tuned. I averaged 7.5 for the year pulling a 7 car trailer usually around 14' tall and anything but aerodynamic. Now if only it didn't leak oil! Lol
