Sandblasting some trailers. I always used primer and tremclad but wondering if some have had any experience with 2 part epoxy paints. Do they really last that much longer or is it just a high priced paint that lasts as long as a couple of coats of tremclad.

We've used the 2 part paints on a car frame. It looks good but the car is still in pieces at the moment so I can't comment on its longevity. We picked that type of paint because a lot of lowbedders claimed they were getting good results using it on their lowbeds and log trailers.

+1 for the POR15. Easy to apply. I usually brush it on, but maybe it can be sprayed. About $45 a quart at Napa but well worth it. Buy a needle scaler and clean the frame of all rust flakes first then pressure wash it before you apply.

With the POR-15 you HAVE to wash down the frame well before applying or you'll be wasting time and money. You must still wash it even after sandblasting. Their degreaser works very well. Need 2 coats of the POR and then it needs to be top coated, POR is UV sensitive.

This stuff is cured by moisture so you'll have to wait a bit between coats. I have found that if you wait till the first coat is just tacky but doesn't come off on a rubber glove is the best time to apply second coat. Same thing for every coat after that including their top coat.

POR-15 is a pain in the ### to apply correctly, especially on something large like a trailer frame. I recommend spraying it to speed up the process.

Other option is to blast and wash with the POR degreaser, dry, spray it with 2-part epoxy primer and then Imron or any other heavy duty topcoat.

If you skip washing the bare metal down you are guaranteed to get rust down the road. Most important step to prevent rust is making sure the metal is oil and dirt free so the paint can bond to the bare metal. Guess which step most people skimp on.

No it's a single part paint. It is a pain in the ### to get every thing right for it to work like their claims but if you get it right it will last longer than any other coating.
