Wow, cool stuff!! Thanks everyone.
That's funny....now DAF is PACCAR owned.
I was wondering Haycarter, how is Western Star doing currently in Australia? Do they have a big market share of heavy truck sales there?

Not that model. Not remotely Road Commander related. I drove A Western Star COE a few times in the 80's. A company I worked for had one, Big Cam 400 Cummins.
The Western Star cabover was a much bigger cab than the road commander.
I also drove road commanders in the same time frame. Nice enough truck, but smaller cab.201 Thanks this. -
Western Star are distributed independently of Freightliner, Mercedes & Fuso trucks here in Australia. (much to Daimler Trucks Frustration.) About 18 months ago Penske bought out the Australian Distributor & there have been a few Cultural changes, But everything seems to be going Ok now...
They're not sold in the numbers they once were, but there's still plenty about & now Penske has got Things the way they want you are starting to see more new ones on the road.
They sell quite a Few Cummins powered ones,& the ISXe5 with No EGR or DFP is a strong selling point for those who Don't want to Buy a Kenworth.. -
She looks gooood, all dressed up like that.

Quite remarkable to read about these old COE's. Very interesting to hear about all the different experiences with them in the old days. I can just imagine how uncomfortable they must've been.
I'm from South Africa and we still have length laws limiting the legal overall length to 22m/72ft BUT the Gross weight is limited to 56t/112000lb. This means 99% of our trucks are Euro cabovers pulling double trailers (we call superlinks). There are however two non-Euro model cabovers here. They are the Freightliner Argosy (http://www.freightliner.co.za/images/pdfs/argosy_spec.pdf) with available today with Detroit or Cummins up to 620HP/2800Nm and International 9800i with Cummins only(http://southern-africa.internationaltrucks.com/assets/pdf/9800i_Spec_Sheet.pdf). You still get the basic old school feel from the Navistar but I must say the Freightliner has come a long way.
Check out these videos of them driving in SA. (Remember: No US emission laws here
)
201 Thanks this. -
Kinda looks like a mid 80s. I drove an 85 that looked kinda like that. I found an old 79 Transtar II International cabover Im thinking about buying. Fellow just wants 3900 for it, says it runs good. Has a 290 Cummins in it. Needs a little bodywork and a paint job.
