Not using squelch is what I meant by having it WIDE OPEN. If it were closed, it'd be active, squelching out signals. Also, the needle is supposed to move on any noise. When you opened your RF gain all the way and got all that hiss, your needle should have moved, just like when those voices came through. That's the way it works from the factory. Don't know why he had to alter the meter for the tune? But that concerns me.Last edited: May 6, 2016

He didn't touch the meter. He increased the gain of the front end and dropped the noise floor. What you saw in that video didn't truly demonstrate the capability of that receiver which is why I said that he needed to make a new video when he hears a guy 30 miles away

I understood what you meant, I was just saying I don't use squelch. Put in your verbage, it's always wide open.
I guess it's hard to tell in the video that the needle is in fact moving a little when I turn up the rf gain. But I purposely picked a very rf-quiet place to make the video and show how quiet the radio can be. I was at an ohio turnpike service plaza, at the far end of the lot away from buildings, power lines, trucks, etc. Basically mimicking highway conditions.
I took another video with a close up of the needle in slightly more static inducing conditions this morning and another after having pulled out of a Pilot and going by power lines etc. It's very hard to capture video and drive lol.
But yes the needle moves to around 3 when I pull into a parking lot under power lines and to around 5 or 6 when I pull under a fuel island canopy, toll booths etc. And I have to turn the rf gain down.
I seriously doubt that the meter has been doctored, lol.

Rolling down the interstate with the rf turned all the way up its around 0.75 s units of noise.
darthanubis Thanks this. -
I'm kind of jealous that Evvy gets to spend lots of time with his radio because he's over the road and I'm stuck slip seating in a local job and I don't get any radio time at all
Evvy Thomas Thanks this. -
I am in the exact same position, but honestly when i go home at noon on friday i kind of forget about it.darthanubis and rabbiporkchop Thank this.

Before my divorce even when I was home, I'd at least spend a couple hours on my personal radio talking skip.
Now that I'm forced to work in PA at 80% pay reduction to keep custody of my kids, I can't afford the extra gas to burn for a couple hours of fun. -
Skip is rolling in strong right now. Must have been a big solar flare.
Ougigoug and rabbiporkchop Thank this. -
WoW 80% pay reduction that's sucks!!!
Meanwhile time with kids is absolutely priceless.
Sadly we don't have local position in your area if it ever happen i will be more than happy to let you know, our local guy do really good.
