Friday, May 06,2016 12:16AM In the North Valley, a deadly big rig crash almost ended with the truck driving through an apartment complex.
Investigators said the big rig careened off Highway 99, crashed through a concrete wall, then smashed into some parked cars.
The driver of the truck was killed and another man was also hurt.
"There wasn't any physical evidence to indicate that the driver took evasive action, just that the vehicle left the roadway and traveled down through the shoulder and then into the wall," said a CHP officer.
The truck came just feet from the apartment building and some people who live there said they've been concerned something like this would happen.
One resident of the apartment complex said, "It's definitely been something that we've been concerned about. We have hoped it would never come to life, but it has. Just hoping that some sort of precautions will be made."
Hazmat crews were called to the crash scene to clean up fuel that leaked onto the road.
No word on what may have caused the truck to go off the highway.

Has to be more to it than he fell asleep. Idk about you, but I'd wake up pretty darn fast the minute I left the roadway and I #### sure would be awake as I crashed THROUGH a concrete wall.

His point may have been the fact that once you go off road, waking up or not, it makes very little difference in the outcome. Nothing good is going to happen.
Could have been a medical issue, or worse as far as I'm concerned; distracted by spilt beverage, dropped cigarette ash, and possibly even texting.
In any event, the result was tragic in this case.unloader Thanks this. -
Yes, tragic. Vanishing is right, there could be a lot of possible causes. It's fun to speculate, but do it lightly until your facts are available. How many will follow thru on that? Probably not many.
I prefer to speculate on the distracted driver cause, even as I openly admit I know nothing. It's always a good percentage guess, though. Sad about the driver and his loved one, not to mention the victims. CA99 is an old highway, very much developed all along those towns.
Good truck inspections, pre/post-trips, regular maintenance, and good safety equipment - tires and shocks, air bags, mirrors, all we can do to minimize equipment failure helps, a lot, but there's so much more to focus on once we're at the wheel. Like turning off your electronics in urban traffic, a very good one.vanishing point Thanks this. -
I usually dont form negative opinions about people, unless their behavior gives me reason to. If there is anything that causes me to make snap judgements with individuals, it's their selfish acts behind the wheel, functioning with a mobile device.
There's too many instances of such nonsense. Which is why I have no sympathy for someone who gets killed by their own poor decision(s). Regardless of their age and social status.
IMO, device-distracted drivers rank right up there with drunk drivers & wreckless drivers/motorcycle riders. -
I don't either, Vanishing, but I do feel sorrow for their victims. I/we see drivers of all kinds using devices every day, all day, big rig drivers included. In the end, we'll all be victims of inconsiderate and foolish drivers, because it's the @$#hole drivers who make more rules necessary for all, even the drivers who are safe and trying hard to be responsible. More fools, more rules, more rules, more enforcement, - it's a bad cycle.

It's hard to tell from the angle of the picture, but it looks like, at least from the right side, that the cab is sound. If so, that may point to a medical emergency. The driver's passing may not have been caused by the accident, it may have caused the accident.

I was behind him, saw the cop put his rain coat over drivers body. No skid marks, drove thru chicken wire fence then block wall with car port behind wall.
I've been waiting for someone to hit that wall. It's to close to 99.
