Well sounds just like an 07 I had when the rack actuator bolts broke on it and allowed the actuator to sit and bang on the head all the time. Cat, in logic only an idiot could appreciate, told me I was "lucky" I brought it in when I did because it would have eventually ruined the head. They then repaired it with an "upgraded design" at my expense, which lasted until I was able to get rid of it and "upgrade" to 2 3406B's and a 6nz with which I have experienced zero (0) actuator issues. LOL. Good luck to you with this.
P.S. You might think about learning how to change turbo studs and rockers as well to save on labor costs.lilillill Thanks this. -
Make sure that tapping sound isn't just a exhaust manifold leak, if it only does it under load. Rough running. Do a cutout test on injectors and vva's.

I got pretty good at doing that on an '05 Pete with a BXS. They stopped breaking, however, when I made a special tool to get a socket on the nuts and used a torque wrench. Lubed the threads, 35 ft lbs and they never broke again.
It wasn't exactly Cat's brightest idea to hang a couple hundred pounds of turbos with four measely 3/8" studs. I would have liked to go up to a 7/16" but the hot housing would've had to be machined in order to have enough clearance for a nut and socket. It wasn't my truck and I wasn't willing to risk destroying a $3000 turbo. -
The injector height fixture is overpriced and not needed. A dial caliper locked at 3.070" does the job just as well and has other uses.
You can also get by without the engine barring tool, but it does make the job a lot easier in most chassis. Working on mostly car haulers with a headrack in the way, the tool isn't much help, we jack up 1 drive tire and put it in high gear and someone bumps the engine over with the tire while another finds the pin hole. We've marked all of our dampers to know when it's close.
We don't have any BXS engines, but the MXS and NXS engines have updated rocker studs that should be done if they haven't already. They also have updated thicker IVA housings due to a cracking issue, so check them very close for cracks around where the IVA solenoids mount.lilillill Thanks this. -
I have a dial caliper, but on my Columbia, I don't think it would be very easy to do 5 and 6 without the tool. It's jammed way up under the firewall. Heck, it was about all I could do to get the rocker arms back up under there while trying to keep them from flipping, all while laying on the radiator support. It is inconceivable to me that they didn't make a removable doghouse on that truck.
I will have to check mine closely (an '07 NXS). It could be the source of the odd tapping that just showed up a little while ago. -
One of ours just went through this recently and it was a bugger to find the issue because it could have been several things. Turned out that dropped an actuator. Not the little solenoid but the actual actuator. The hollow bolt looking nut on the underside came out. Don't know what else to call it... LOL

Happened once with me on c13 , when i was company driver. It start vibrating and make weird noise when climbing hills or shifting up..... Company told me to keep pulling towards home.... Resulted in cracked head after 500 miles ....
I think it was because of loose bolt inside somewhere.... I suggest to see mechanic asap -
Could be a loose u joint.
