I just joined this group and like many others I'm making a career (lifestyle) change. I owned a retail store with my wife for over 10 years, and as you may guess, used to be a Park Ranger. But due to my age and lack of updated experiences, I found that jobs were few and far between. Then someone suggested trucking. I've been used to working long hours, don't mind being away from home for long periods, and love to drive. WOW! It just made sense. A recruiter suggested a local community college where I will start in a few weeks. I discovered that I had a little Blood Pressure issue, but that's OK now. So can anyone suggest if I should approach companies now, or wait till they do a job fair at the school? I really thought that my age might be an issue, but now I understand that my maturity and experience could be a benifit. Plus I've got over 30 years with no violations or accidents. So, anyone want to take a Learner out for a ride?

Just do your research and make lots of phone calls. Take everything you hear from the recruiters with a grain of salt. Make sure and read about the companies you are interested in, here on this site. You can learn alot from this site.

Thanks all! I've visited several trucker sites and this is by far the best. Lots of helpful advice and information. I'll enjoy learning from you folks.

Oh yeah, One more question. When I got my Learners Permit, one of my restrictions was no air brakes, even though I passed that test. Is that just because it's a Learners or did DMV make a mistake? Like that could happen :biggrin_2551:

ParkRanger - Congratulations, and welcome to the forum. If you passed the air brake section of the test, then DMV made a mistake. They did the same with mine. You'll need to go back to the office where you got your permit and have them issue a corrected replacement. No cost to you, but you'll have to wait in line, get a new photo, etc. Make sure you get it corrected before you start school. Will you be going to JCC, by chance?

    ParkRanger Thanks this.

I'm currently at JCC, and will finish on the 22nd. Just got my CDL and looking forward to getting hired on once school is completed. They do a good job at school. You'll find lots of good information (and even more opinion) in this forum. Read widely, and wisely.
