In order for you to be heard on the other side of the conversation if the person on the receiving end does not have one of Mark's radios you will need to compensate with power to make up for the lack of sensitivity on the receiving end of the conversation

I will try to contact him on Facebook & also, will a Texas Ranger 966 work as well?
My brother has one he purchased from Copper Electronics that they tuned and aligned &
he said he would give it to me....... Or, I will start looking for a Cobra 148?

Any radio can be made into a good radio. Sometimes it takes longer on one than it might on another. It would be worth asking him for an estimate on the Radioactive radio

I guess I forgot to ask you the most important question. What type of vehicle are you going to be communicating with? If it's two cars then you might be able to get away with a couple brand new stock Cobra 148. Talking to and hearing a tractor-trailer at that distance is a little bit more of a challenge but is easily doable

Okay thanks, I will be communicating with tractor trailers, other vehicles...etc.....
on road trips.... I really do not want to run an amp & guess I will live with the limitations
of these radios; but would like them to be tuned properly & hopefully Mark Sherman
    can re-do the General Lee....

    rabbiporkchop Thanks this.

A car will always transmit further than a tractor trailer so that's something to take into consideration

    harleyXR Thanks this.

    Interesting link.

Too bad I hadn't a clue what I was looking at.

Does this include cars with magnetic-mounts, such as a K30 or LilWil? Is it the car's ground plane that makes the difference?

Yes the Wilson 5k and Sirio 5K Magnet mount on the roof of a car or pickup truck will give you better performance than can be achieved with a tractor trailer. I can't vouch for K30 or Lil Will, I'm sure they would work decently as well.
hard to beat a flat roof as a ground plane.

I had a little wil and I didn't like it.

My old RadioShack 64" base loaded whip on a 5" magnet mount kicked the crap out of it.

    wolverine11 and rabbiporkchop Thank this.
