Do trucks have to be registered in 1000,00 lb increments or can they be registered by the lb.?
Example: can you register at 54,999 lbs. to take advantage of the max weight but stay below the 55,000 lb. heavy truck tax?
Do trucks have to be registered in 1000,00 lb weight increments?

That's what I do with one of mine, but I use an even number. 55k is the start of hvt (2290), so I go 54,500 lbs. Been that way for years now.

I suppose it depends on your state. In NY, I have definitely seen all kinds of numbers like 17,995, etc. Even if the state's registration fees are only applied in certain increments, maybe they let you be more precise in the registered weight because insurance companies use a different scale.

As everyone else said it depends on the state. Not only that but the county. For a CMV in Colfax county Ne you can only go in 2000 lb increments. I wanted to get 95,000 plates in colfax, but I could only get 47 ton plates as the max. PS getting higher tags doesn't hurt. In Nebraska I can go 90,000 legally. With my overweight during harvest, I can go 103,500. Off season If I'm under 94K, they can just get me for an over axle weight. Once you get over gross, that can be expensive! Heavier plates could save you money in the long run!

Most of the trucks in my employers fleet have differing registrations. Based on number of axles. To my knowledge only 6 of 25 trucks have full weight registrations.
Because we do mostly LTL and have several single axle trucks.
3 of them are OTR trucks and the other 3 are the line haul trucks.
