Do you guys know if UPS freight has set schedules for P/T dock with Cdl? I live about 50 miles from the DFW but it seems all the good LTL companies are on call the first couple years

Ask @Russian Rabbit. He's a current UPSF driver. From what I know, P/T dock with CDL means you work where you are needed. A lot of times they'll work part time on the docks and the other half doing P&D, OR you can spend the whole time on the docks.

From my experience, UPSF doesn't really have on call. You pretty much have a set schedule, but you may be called in early to work the docks if they need you. They do have sort of an extra board, where if work is slow, they may ask you to not to come in, they'll just give it to the senior junior man. UPSF drivers don't really live by the phone, but their starting pay is a completely different story.

I know a couple drivers doing the same thing at ACME, over in Denver PA. They rent a townhouse around the area and share expenses, and then go home on the weekends. ACME use to be in Philly, but when they moved up to Denver, a lot of their employees went with them to relocate. The ones that didn't just rented a place for the week.

Just goes to show how important location is in earning potential.
Two guys working for the same company at two different terminals one guy could be making twice as much as the other guy simply because there's more work available

Anyone familiar with Columbus Ohio locations? I saw ABF just put a post up for full time combo city/dock drivers. But I pulled up the terminal on satellite view and it is a pretty small terminal. So that would make me nervous about being laid off in slow times. But they seem to have some nice benefits. Pension. Plus 401k.

Looked at OD on the map too. At least 4 times bigger than ABFs terminal. Kinda curious how their retirement benefits compare to ABF.

The ABF drivers I run into (in Columbus) are all super-busy, working tons of hours, even during slow times. Their terminal here is small because they have a monster hub in Dayton, so Columbus is an end-of-line terminal despite being a much bigger city. They need more space, but can't really expand where they're at. I think that's one reason they are stuck personnel-wise. They can't hire as many drivers as they'd need, because there's no room for any extra equipment in there.

OD is huge off Alum Creek Drive, and I've heard from their drivers they are actually going to expand it by around 100 doors. OD pays more, but ABF pays OT. The problem with ABF in terms of retirement is that the Central States pension fund is unsustainable and will eventually go bankrupt. The current retirees have recently taken massive cuts that will greatly affect their standard of living. I'm not sure what OD's 401k is like, but at least it would be an account in your name.

i don't know if there is such a thing as "part-time" dock/cdl. We DO have COMBO dock/cdl. But it may depend on the terminal.

Our combo dock/cdl's seem to make more money than just drivers because they come in early---like 7am load trucks, then take out a truck of their own and peddle or do volume loads and they may take out another one if there's time. They would get back at the same time as me, when i was doing city P+D so i know they are making more $$$ than regular drivers.

As far as i know UPS Freight IS NOT on call. You pretty much have a set start time---within 90 variation every day.

image.png image.png This is the terminal in garland,tx kinda small but I'm hoping it's like what you described. They've been hiring for this spot for some time now it sounds like this is the same thing as combo just worded differently

Part time dock MIGHT be exactly what it IS. Where I use to work at, we had a lot of part time dockworkers who basically worked a couple hours a day or a couple days a week. They were pretty much waiting for a fulltime position to open up. Some only worked part time to supplement their income while attending school. And since dockworkers are the ones that yard jockey, that may be where the CDL comes into part.

I'm not saying this is what it is, but like I mentioned, I do know UPSF has part time dockworkers.
