Minimum wage & trucking

That's true. There's no need for extra pay to stay away. I think drivers only start to think that way when they're told there's no work for them.

 

How about working for companies that have minimum guaranteed pay. That's what I'm trying for the first time. 0-2500 miles a week i get the same pay. Plus if I work the weekend they pay an extra $100. If I drive over 2,500 I get paid by the mile.

 

Yep... I am making just as much driving, in my first year, as I was working as a professional white collar employee after 20 years.

And it's a lot easier too... LOL

To expect every driving job to be a six figure job just makes me laugh... Now, if you are an O/O or doing specialized heavy loads or something, sure... But you have years of experience going into it and some skin in the game too.

Someone doing D&H and bumping a dock once a day... Not a chance.

There is an engineering firm near me that i pull for regularly. I'm fairly good friends with one of the partners so we tall shop quite a bit. I actually make more working 6 months out of the year than any of his engineers not named a partner, do working full time.

Most company drivers earn over 40k a year starting pay. that is more than half the country makes. Look up the average starting pay scale for other occupations that take a lot more education to get into and just as vital to our society. Teachers are barely over 30k. Nurses. Firefighters. Commercial airline pilots. Police officers go to work every day prepared to be shot and killed for 40k.

Is 40k awesome money? Ofcourse not. But for a job that requires almost no training is not #### bad.

Yup... Starting wages in trucking isn't that bad compared to what I started with after a four year degree... Granted trucking may not be a great career for a young family with dad or mom gone a lot, but 40k isn't chump change either.

As with your engineer example, everyone starts at entry level... If you opt to stop there and expect a union or government to do the rest for you then that is your option. If not, get a year in and start shopping yourself around and find that better paying jobs.
