Poll shows Pennsylvanians disapprove of I-80 tolls, Turnpike lease

A majority of Pennsylvania voters disapprove of Interstate 80 becoming a toll road as well as the possibility of the Pennsylvania Turnpike being leased to private investors, researchers from Quinnipiac University said Tuesday, Aug. 5.
Researchers from Quinnipiac University, based in Hamden, CT, posed 17 questions to 1,580 Pennsylvania voters in a telephone poll conducted from Thursday, July 30, through Sunday, Aug. 3.
The poll included questions about state budget issues, lawmaker ratings and how state officials should react to a recent scandal involving two state House Democrats, their staffs and the alleged use of state funds for political gain.

A highway in Western Canada that was built with toll revenue is paid
for and the tolls have been removed, British Columbia Premier Gordon
Campbell has announced.

Tolls collected since 1986 have paid off the $848-million price tag
for the Coquihalla Highway connecting the city of Hope to Kamloops,
British Columbia.

"Removing the tolls will mean literally hundreds of dollars annually
in the pockets of British Columbians who regularly use the highway,"
Campbell stated Friday, Sept. 26.

"It will also mean thousands of dollars in annual saving for truckers
who account for 20 percent of highway traffic along the corridor but
pay more than half of the total toll revenue."

Campbell said the Coquihalla Highway saw 2.7 million passenger
vehicles and 700,000 truck trips in 2007.

Transportation officials said removing tolls will open up new
economic opportunities in the province.

"In 2003, our government passed a policy clearly stating that any
infrastructure financed by toll revenue must see the tolls removed
upon recovery of construction costs," Transportation and
Infrastructure Minister Kevin Falcon stated in a news release.

Falcon said the removal of the Coquihalla tolls will help open up
transportation networks, including the Gateway Project, the Kicking
Horse Canyon, the Cariboo Connector lane expansion and the William R.
Bennett Bridge.
