I live in Cleveland, TN near Chattanooga and currently drive a 3 car hauler for someone else. I have an opportunity to buy a single axle semi with a 4 car trailer. I live right in the middle of several auctions and I'm wondering if I can be successful primarily hauling for auctions? I would definitely look to pick up additional business from dealers but would this be a good way to start and keep me busy? Thanks

Most likely it will be a complete waste of time and money. Those prices typically have been beaten down to dry van rates just so guys can stay local.

Now on the opportunity to buy a SA and 4 car part, what equipment are you looking at?

Thanks for the info. I'm looking at a 2006 Freightliner M2 and a 2008 Kaufman 4 car wedge trailer. The truck is a single axle with 423,518 miles on it. I'd like to have something lower on mileage but the truck seems to be in pretty good shape.

I would pass on that setup. Even a tandem semi would be a better option than any medium duty. They are underpowered and less fuel efficient and don't last as long.

If you had to start with that trailer it would work but I would be putting money away toward an air brake 7 car asap.

I appreciate your help. It sucks that people will drive prices down so cheap that they can't even take care of their own equipment and ruins the business for everyone else. I see duallys now pulling 5 car trailers and wonder how that can be legal but I guess it is.

With the right dualie it is, you just have to watch the axle rating (which most do not). The problem with dualies doing this sort of work is that they weren't built for that kind of workload 24/7/365. They'll pull the load but, if you look at most of these guys over the long run, they'll mechanically trash that dualie within 2 years. Even a class 7 tractor is better for this sort of thing than any dualie.

Interesting comments. I'm looking at buying a Ford F650. If I am correct, that's considered a medium duty truck. I have heard before they may not be the best trucks for this kind of work but I always wonder how these guys with duallys do it up and down the highway everyday! I am looking at a F650 and perhaps a 3-4 car wedge. If that 06 M2 won't do the job then I doubt an F650 will... Discouraging...

To add... I know a fella who has an 07 Dodge 3500 and he swears up an down that he is making money. He has a dedicated run from SC to ATL GA...

The guy with the 3500? I think you just answered your own question : he has a dedicated run. In other words, he's not fighting all the rate-cutting vultures on Central Dispatch for most of his income. That's really the only way to make any significant money in this sector IMHO. Otherwise you are at the mercy of the spot freight market.
