Abilene Motor Express would be better than Knight.
Mostly dry van and some refrigerated and runs coast to coast. You're in their hiring area.

I was reefer at Knight and still pull reefer now as an O/O elsewhere. Wait times, Lumpers, night time hours, etc are long held misconceptions about pulling reefer. As if a dry load never has to deliver any other time than 8-5? Reefer is steady, good miles, and pay is normally higher. I have deliveries during the day or night; it varies just like any other freight type. You do encounter Lumpers a lot but that isn't a bad thing; would you want to break down 30 pallets of chicken with 10 pages of SKUs? Probably not. I have done very well with reefer and continue to do very well with it.
I left Knight because they closed my terminal and their O/O program wasn't that great. I made 65,200 my first year driving there. I got my CDL through their training program as well. I would recommend them. -
Dry van load I did haul usually weren't grocery loads and most delivered in daylight hours. Lots of odd stuff such as bags of dental cement out of the desert in New Mexico or scrap copper from Egypt on the piers of Delaware, etc. -

I read your whole thread and that is what has made me consider Knight more seriously.
I've been in electrical contracting for 25 years, owned a campground for 6 years, when I sold the campground I went back to contracting for the past 2 years, made 130k last year, but realized why I left contracting, so I quit again.
Now I'm at the point in my life to start a new career for "fun" per sei. My retirement money is set aside and I just need something to get me through the next 10-15 years, you know pay the day to day costs, food, healthcare, taxes, innsurance etc. I know anyone reading this thinks I'm nuts, but trust me money isn't everything!!!
After reading Misesian's post has drawn me to believe a mega carrier could be the best next direction to accomplish those needs at least for the next two years...
Misesian, for whatever its worth, I believe you have the perfect attitude, I've read two of your threads, the Knight and the Being an O/O under a Carrier's Authority ones and the way you deal with the "haters" is awesome.
Thanks for everything. -
The no driver cameras is a tough nut to crack. I predict within a years virtually all large and medium sized companies will have them.

JJSKOA Thanks this.

This might "####" some people off, but I've never been a fan of the "present day unions"
Besides that, with the state of our country, and the economy, I wouldn't be able to put any faith in a possible union pension.
I do appreciate the info. -
O
JJSKOA Thanks this.
