Switching from a 48 to 53'

How does he turn with so many axles?

 

The driver was put in jail for that???(maybe I'm not reading correctly)

I don't think thats a function of loading it on a 53fl vs a 48fl…I think loading that much weight on a 53fl fixed spread with the front axle fixed that far forward is the issue…..those 53fl suck to have…...

 

I had a feeling the driver was thrown in the hoosgow for a different reason. Resisting arrest?

If he moved the load fully to the front, wouldn't the truck tandems be over 34?

 

Any time you are close to or over 40,000 on a spread you really want to check the individual rear axle weights. Nothing like running over a scale and discovering that the leveler isn't working properly and you have 18000 on one axle and 22000 on the other.

 

Both of those front axles are steer axles.

 

That's one of those trailers with the 10ft tailswing that I told you about. Now if we can get some participation from @Hurst and have him post a picture of his trailer for educational purposes.

By now, everyone should know how to find the center of their trailer for loading purposes. Look at the wheel position of your 53. Look at the wheel position of Hurst's trailer...how much farther to the rear. Because a flatbed has the longer deck, you were able to move the load up to the very front of the trailer. But if you had a stepdeck with the same wheelbase and wheel configuration with a long, heavy load, you would be butting up to the step on every load and still be over on the spread...long pipe, 40ft sea cans...etc.

I stated before that I would not switch from a 48 flat to a 53 flat. The only way I would go from a 48 flat would be to go with a 53 step with the sliding rear axle as a step with the same wheel configuration as that flat you're pulling would almost be worthless.
