I actually had my CDL back in 1999 went to school did the three week training passed and had it for years. Got injured at work put me out for two years never renewed my CDL basically because I didn't know if I was gonna ever walk or be able to drive again. I still remember most of all the testing and hands on stuff but just don't have the time to find a truck and go to DMV for the test. And with my eye issue and weight not sure if I could get a Med card again

Umm you need a medical card even for your current setup.

My combined GVWR is less than 10,001 lbs so they said I wasn't required per FMSCA rep

How do you manage to stay under 10,000? Maybe specialize in moving Fiat's and SmartCars?

Terry270 and Ryan S2016 Thank this.

So you had the trailer derated and only only move tiny cars to stay under 10k with that setup? Because that's the only way it would possibly work

I can vouch for that first hand. A few times I've bobtailed around Virginia and Florida I've had to hit the scales. In Virginia I think they were checking calibration or something because the trooper asked me to backup to the first set, then the second then the third again(which was fine). In Florida I guess there have been a couple of cases where bobtails have been busted for drug running(the rear drive axle was a "dummy"-the internals were removed and where the differential should be was packed with drugs).

I may sound a little uneducated here, but I will do my best to explain.
The combination of both my truck and trailer is approx 8000lbs. The trailer weighs according to the stamp, approx 1900lbs. The axles are rated at 7000 lbs combined. It's 19.8 feet long and 102 inches wide, fender to fender. I do haul way bigger cars then mini's and smart cars. I have jeeps mini vans full size sedans, just yesterday hauled a charger to knoxville and 370z to statesville. I asked repeatedly at the FMSCA also my process agent and even several DOT Motor Carrier State Troopers about the Medical Card and the answer was all the same. I am not CDL Licensed and my vehicle unloaded is under 10,001 lbs. Please if I am doing something wrong then tell me so I can make it right. There is no need to add insult to injury. I am doing the best with what I got. So positive feedback would be appreciated

It's about GVW not what it weighs empty. If you are saying that your truck and trailer empty weigh 8000 lbs then you will easily be over 10,001 lbs loaded. Example....you hauled that Charger that weighs right at 4000 lbs plus your empty weight of 8000 lbs equals 12,000 lbs total. In the door jamb of your pickup it should have GVW somewhere in the sticker/tag. There should be one as well on the trailer itself. If and once you find both of those add the 2 GVW's and will tell you your total GVW. With you saying that the axles are rated at 7000 lbs on the trailer I would have to guess that is or really close to the GVW of the trailer.

    Terry270 Thanks this.

The Axles are 3500 lbs a piece totaling 7000 lbs. I will take a look at both and get exact numbers but I am pretty sure it's accurate

Yup what he said. Not only are you over on gross weight while loaded, when you add the weight rating of both truck and trailer you are over there as well.
