We have to have HOS rules or else everyone would drive 20 hours a day and run 6,000 miles a week.
The current hours provide needed rest periods and maximum driving time and length of the work day.
Are they perfect? No,
But if obeyed it stops the drivers who think they can drive on no sleep.
And if you crash into me and hurt me, I'll go over your logs with my lawyer and your cell phone and fuel records, and if needed video from your customers,
Anything wrong and what was yours is mine, judges and jury's hate trucks.

No point to even begin to explain to you.
I only hope nobody will ever let you work on paper log, if you think any owner op would do this, driving 20 hours a day.. Is this even possible for a human being to do? You, sir, are totally irresponsible. I definitely vote ELD for whatever truck you'd ever be driving. And don't you ever own a business in trucking.
For the rest of us mature and responsible folks, we'll take a bit of flexibility and the free choice in running our businesses. We are not children or convicts out here to be micromanaged, excuse me?? -

Some other thoughts come to mind.
As citizens and/or residents of United States we are ALL protected by US Constitution.
Let me quote from the fifth amendment, real quick:
"No person shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation."
Now... driving a truck in a manner, that doesn't agree with FMCSA prescribed HOS is technically a crime? Or what is it? A traffic violation? What is it? I'm not sure... Anyhow, when law enforcement has evidence a truck driver did drive in manner that they don't agree with, they will most likely detain him, or as they call it "Put him Out of Service" and/or write him a hefty fine. So I am pretty sure this fifth amendment quote can be somehow applied here.
Therefore... You should never be forced/compelled to witness against yourself. Yes?
So, now.. they want you to put this "ELD" device in the vehicle you own. They want you to pay for it, and its installation, they want you to maintain it.. Just to have it track your movement, hours of service, and so on, in sole purpose of providing this information to them (law enforcement) when they request it..?
I mean Isn't in technically and literally being compelled to incriminate yourself and/or witness against yourself? Thinking logically I don't see how this mandate could stand in any court of law. Have we abandon our constitutional rights somewhere down the road?
I mean, guys, am I wrong here? Please correct me if I am wrong.
Thanks.Big John Classic HQ, sourdiesel and Dave_in_AZ Thank this. -
My first two years I ran wild on paper logs,
And I sat in Buckles tavern in Amarillo and a driver ran way illegal just so he could drink beer there, instead of way back yonder where his log book would have stopped him. I dunnorocknroll81 Thanks this. -
