Per diem is/ was paid out with company driver pay, at 10 cents per mile. It is easily seen on my settlements from Stevens. Per diem as a contractor, with Stevens, is paid out by claiming the number of days on the road at tax filing time. Then deducting it from the pay as a trucker. It's about a thousand per month as a contractor. Other trucking companies pay this out for their company drivers in a variety of ways. 10 cents per mile, in addition to mileage pay, as a company driver with Stevens.

Per diem is a tax deduction, not income. I think you're misreading your settlement.

Just to explain how company per diem works:
So, say you get paid 30 cents a mile. You choose per diem pay at 10 cents a mile.
On your settlement it will show:
1500 miles at .20/mi = $300 less taxes, ss, medicare, and any other deductions. This is your net pay.
Then add the .10/mi per diem of $150, which is not taxed to Net pay for your final pay.
Now, say you average over the years time, 450 miles a day, At .10/mi that equals $45/ day.
At tax time, you, as a driver governed by Federal HOS rules allowed to claim $63 a day X 80% for each day out on the road. This leave you approx $2.40 for each day that you can add to your tax deduction.
This is a simplified example, but is just to show how it works.
By taking the per mile per diem, you bring home more each check. By not taking it, you take the full per diem deduction at tax time and bring home a little less each paycheck.
Good luck to you no matter which way you decide to go.

    Emulsified Thanks this.

Thanks Buzzard. That's how I explained it on the previous page, albeit a simpler explanation. :)

I don't know what your point is. Other than to try to disparage the Stevens pay system?(There are plenty out there who think we don't make that much)
Look, for anyone considering Stevens, your starting pay with Stevens, whatever it is , add 10 cents per mile, that is considered travel allowance for company drivers. All this dude is disputing an eyewitness and acting like I cant read my own settlement or add or subtract from totals from past settlements. If you want the latest ask our recruiting department about the per diem for company drivers. Just remember that per diem is also part of your tax returns, ask a tax professional how it works for company drivers.
Bottom line is that Stevens doesn't pay 20 cents per mile and add 10 cents per diem.
I was surprised when I first saw an extra 10 % for travel allowance added to my mileage rates last year.

No one is disparaging anyone. Just trying to clarify your misperception. You don't get paid 30cpm, plus another 10 cpm per diem, thereby making your pay 40cpm. (That's how you're explainin it). You're only being paid 30cpm, but being taxed each pay period for 20cpm.

Good grief dude, why are you insisting on something when you haven't seen Jack and can't support it with evidence? My misperception? You are acting like a troll. Call our recruiting team on Monday so they can clarify your perception of my misperceptions.
I was paid .28 cents per mile last spring and they added 10 cents per mile during my probationary period. (They may have raised the starting probationary period pay, I don't know)

    1. I went to school at Stevens in 2010, so I know how it works.
    2. Why would I call recruiting? They are known to not be 100% truthful. There job is to get people in the door. Don't believe me? How much of all this money that they told you that you can make lumping your own loads have you actually made?
    3. Compare your settlements to your paystub.
    4. Just to confirm that I'm right, I called my old trainer, who's part of the night/weekend crew (Emulsified). He'll post later tonight confirmig what I've told you.
    5. If you were really getting paid 10 cpm per diem, then why would Stevens give you the choice to opt out?

1They don't give you a choice to opt out of per diem unless you decide to lease a truck and get out of the company pay schedule.
So your info about Stevens comes from 2010? And you didn't drive for Stevens as a company driver like I did?
For those considering Stevens, recruiting will tell you the truth about Stevens pay, but they may not mention the per diem for company drivers. ( You'll make millions, not.!)
I have no doubts about your general knowledge of per diem for truck drivers. I dispute the marbles you have upstairs when you contend with what I saw on my own settlements and your own estimation of what Stevens drivers are currently paid.
Fyi- Stevens doesn't have pay stubs, at least with me they havent had pay stubs. Settlements online match what was direct deposited to my bank account.
Lumping loads is possible, but I haven't gotten involved with lumping loads myself. Various detention pays are possible and I have made money from that.
