What are good starter companies based in the Southwest? I am looking for OTR and I like everything I've read about Roehl, but I'm sure there are other companies I haven't considered. I think I would prefer a company that would pay for school and training (or I pay it back later), but I am open to paying for a private school if it will put me in a much better position.

I live in San Francisco now, but I would definitely be moving so I am open to pretty much anywhere in central or southern California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, or maybe Texas.

Give May trucking a look, I started with them and stayed for two years. An eternity for a starter company, it was a pretty good outfit. Fair, decent miles, good equipment. The have a yard in Phoenix, Salem, OR and Payette, ID.

No personal income taxes in Nevada & Texas. I moved to Nevada from Tennessee.
If you can attend a private cdl school, then you can hire on with companies such as:
    Abilene Motor Express
    National Carriers
    Freymiller
    Magnum Ltd.
    KKW Trucking
    Navajo Express
    and others.
Companies such as these hire in the states you listed, so you wouldn't have to change jobs after relocating. You will have to switch your cdl to the new state you choose.

    As for company sponsored training:
    Jim Palmer Trucking
    Southern Refrigerated Transport
hire from the states you listed.

    Riffman and justin7niner Thank this.

So you would recommend going to a private school over training with Roehl? Thanks for your help.

Depends on which company you want to work for. I listed a few that don't have their own school and will hire from private schools.
The two others have their own cdl school. I think Jim Palmer Trucking starts new grads from their school at .40 cpm with extra .05 cpm for fuel savings. Trucks are a lot nicer than Roehl trucks plus they have apu's so you can be comfortable without idling the truck.

Watkins & Shepard has a terminal in Phoenix. And I believe Swifts national headquarters is also in Phoenix.I think Knight also has a terminal there, but I'm not positive? (I'd go with Watkins out of all those I mentioned, but that's just me.) Good luck where ever you end up bud.
