GB is ok most of the time, but I have pushed some lumber into the ground!!!
Job sites it's never a worry, just keep chucking blocks or rocks or whatever until it'll support the load.
It's when you push that foot through the pavement that sucks, kinda look around, anybody watchin'?

How did the trailer hold up / handle?

Everything was good with it. Other than the fact that the clearance light plug under the middle of the trailer had a problem. Worked fine when I picked it up, ended up going out shortly afterward. Wired a jumper around it & told the rental company about it so they can decide how they want to handle it with the manufacturer & the warranty it should have.
Being brand new I wasn't worried about it handling squirrely or breaking on just one trip.
The guy that was dragging my big trailer, which forced me into renting this one, had the problems. Told him where to place the piece, told him to scale it out, he didn't follow any of my input & ended up paying for it. Got himself a nice overweight fine at the scale in Refugio, TX for being overweight on the trailer tridems.
Amazingly, he had eight axles, I had seven, hauling the exact same things 86,000 pound bow thrusters & failure to follow advice he got the ticket. He's never done more than about 60,000 pound loads before, not sure if he will get another chance in the future with us.passingthru69, macavoy and skootertrashr6 Thank this. -

Nope. Like everything else to do with trucking regulations, it's more about the money than anything else. Not to say I haven't seen them force the issue & you end up with an expensive bill for the equipment needed to move it to come pay you a visit. Haven't had to do it personally, I've been pretty good/lucky with my load placement & scale all but the short local moves.
Actually in this instance if he had scaled it & seen that he was over on the trailer & light on the stinger then we could have adjusted the shims & airbags to get more on the stinger. But some people insist on learning the hard/expensive way.Last edited: Jun 10, 2016

I've only had the issue in CA; 2 times, 2cd incident was a load of Avocados, no scale at the loading, as it was the first, and only time hauling the product. I loaded it in the same manner as our regular load of Bananas, same pin placements for trailer and 5th wheel. Was good until I hit the scale on 58, North of Mojave, over about 1000, slid trailer, took care of problem. Ticket was issued to Company, they covered the fine.
First incident was in 1974, Beets, AZ to Sacramento, CA. Loaded up for weekend run, they were iced down to keep them cool - set of doubles, dry van - came home and set until Monday morning. Cordelia, CA scale decided to open early , over gross, no ticket, but did have to unload the excess, until it could be recovered. About 10 canvas bags of fresh beets, 100 lbs ea, and at that Campbell's left 2-3 bags on the truck.
Another driver coming thru picked up the excess, that which was still there, for him to decide their fate.
That was back in the days when allowing excess goods to find its' way into deserving hands was considered neighborly.
Gave away a lot of beets in the next few days.
Never had a problem with heavy loads, on my last trailer I had Digital Scale installed, was always within 100-150 of either CAT or State Scale, knock on wood. -
They are more likely to make trucks with the capability to slide axles & 5th wheels or carrying smaller divisible loads to slide or unload some product to get right.
With set axles & a big one piece load, there is not much you can do other than reposition the load, which entails getting a crane or in some cases a big forklift out to the scale to move it. In his case he could have slid his 5th wheel a little but that wouldn't have been enough & probably would have put him over on the drives. His other option was to adjust the stinger to take more weight, but the cop didn't make him.Last edited: Jun 11, 2016
