JD,
Do you remember the scene in good will hunting where Will does Skylar's homework and then she questions him about it next week. He then compares himself to Mozart and how he couldn't explain but he could just play.
That is what your post reminds me of. How you just had a knack for itjohndeere4020 Thanks this. -
A lot of times it comes down to understanding. Take the shims for example. Most of my employees you could tell to add or take away shims to add or subtract weight and they would do it as needed, but they wouldn't understand why other than because I said so. Then there is one young guy I could explain it to and he would question me until he understood the whole concept. The difference is 99% of the time the people that know (because I said so) will make it ok. The problem comes when a unusual situation arises beyond the norm. That's when the people that understand the concept can think through the situation and get the job done. The others will have to call for help.
In this line of work, you have to understand physics to some degree. I'm not saying you need a PH.D. but you need to atleast know about simple leverage and such as that. The Internet is a wealth of info, get to learning if you want to be at the top of the pile.catalinaflyer, truckdad, johndeere4020 and 1 other person Thank this. -
There is always more than one way to do something,
even a small understanding of physics, even if you don't realize it,, that's what it is....
and thinking through the different scenarios,, how each piece acts on the other pieces..
Bottom line
"every action has an equal and opposite reaction"
In this type of work, if you keep that in mind, and see it or realize it, then you should be able to figure it out safely..
Some people can visualize things better than others,
but truthfully, understanding the basic concepts of
"simple machines" and that "every action has an equal and opposite reaction"
are the two fundamental building blocks that you need to understand.
There are very talented individuals out there that do thoroughly understand those two fundamentals and have no idea what they are or that they do,,, and it really doesn't matter if you know the proper physics language or terms, but you do need to understand why a pry-bar does what it does!!!! or a pulley,, or a ramp....
And then there are those that will never get it.....
Anyway.....
I'm pretty sure it's five o'clock somewhere..
And the woodpile is not stacking itself!!!
Cheers!!truckdad, cnsper, macavoy and 1 other person Thank this. -

Anyone who is honest with themselves would say "The pretending part..." never fully goes away, it continually lurks in the farthest reaches of our mind.
As for age/experience, while it is no longer a Truck Stop, I remember when Boomtown was a small little restaurant, cubicles on either side of a small narrow aisle, which if the waitress had an arm full of plates you waited for her to pass. The place was always packed with Truckers headed over Donner, the food was home cooked out of this world good.Oxbow and passingthru69 Thank this. -
Daaaang!!! I owe you an apology JD. I referred to you as an "older" fella the other day. Sorry bout that. Your only bout 7 or 8 year's older than me.johndeere4020 Thanks this.
