I have a 855 Big Cam dressed with a N14 Air to Air setup in my 1995 W900. The problem you may have is, having room in front of the radiator for the CAC to mount and clear.

And my answer to your original question......
When I drove for H&W I was in a 1987 K100, 365 Cummins 9 spd with 8 bag air ride. I had no problem pulling anything on my back, 80,000 or oversize it didn't matter. Other than general maintenance and upkeep, what would keep you from making that truck work for you? Don't buy a junker, but if it's in good condition the wheel seals are cheap PM. Just my thoughts but, I do all my own work too so...... No fear here.

Could you educate a youngin on how you must run one of these older motors and what would score the liners.

This is my W900L, the air to air was on it when I bought it. As I said earlier, the clearance in front of the radiator would be your larger problem if any. I changed this one from low flow to high flow cooling, engine is a 1987 model in a 1995 truck.

Most had aluminum pistons. Coupled that with lugging at low rpm. Wich sends cylinder tempsup. Less than ideal cylinder lubrication (due to smaller piston cooler nozzles). Also they seemed to develope hot spots probably due to several factors such as over fueling and poor coolant circulation.
The N14 wad redesigned to eliminate most of these issues. Cummins did a remarkable job on them.

I drove a 74 Pete with a 400 Cummins, pulled loads grossing over 100,000 lbs. It had plenty of power. One of the best trucks I ever drove. It was a cabover.

When the EOBR rules are mandated that truck will not be able to comply and will basically become a show piece.

i used to haul 90k gross with a 11.1 detroit with a 9 speed. factory rated at 365hp supposedly was turned up really don't know not fast but got the job done just fine. personally i think the new engines were a little more generously rated than the old ones. like as in there rated in ideal circumstances of what the engine might put out on its best day where the old ones are rated at what it will actually make under real world day to day conditions.
