I'm not with Road Runner, but was with Dawes for years, which is now merged with Road Runner (which was started by ex-Dawes execs and is now owned by a private equity firm out of DC).

It's a whole different ballgame from other OTR companies. It's terminal to terminal LTL with some direct customer deliveries. Pays a linehaul rate, FSC and accessorials (drops, hazmat primarily). You can also use brokers if you want, as long as they're on the approved list. They also have some TL operations now, but I'm not familiar with how they work exactly.

A friend of mine who is still there runs Milwaukee to LA, LA to Albuquerque and Denver (where he delivers to Road Runner agents/drayage partners) and then brokers something back to Milwaukee (he lives in Colorado). For him, living where he does, it's about the only OTR company where he can get home regularly and still have quite a bit of freedom. As a solo he grosses right around $210,000 per year with his reefer trailer.

You won't have anyone holding your hand or pushing you to take freight, it's the epitome of "no forced dispatch". Your best option is to find a lane you want to run and get familiar with the operations personnel in each terminal. While they have been putting an emphasis on loading their own leased operators first, some terminals have contracts with outside carriers in order to handle the volumes they sometimes have. Getting to know the terminal people and them finding out you're dependable makes life for you as a contractor a lot easier.

Don't waste your time coming here. These people don't know how to run a company. They're hiring too many drivers and there's not enough freight. They rail tons of freight so we sit so they can make more money. They contract out tons of freight so they can make more money while the ICs sit, starving. They take some of our FSC, which is ILLEGAL, and they've started shaving miles like we wouldn't notice. You can't book your own freight, you're forced to use their broker side so they can keep the fees and what they shave off, in their pockets. So any way Roadrunner can find a way to screw you, they will. And loading trailers, OMG. They load high and tight and if there's space for a box, they won't close the load till they can fill that spot. So you'll continue waiting. No detention pay. No layover pay. Save yourselves the headache and go with an established company that's run by people who know the industry and care even just a little bit about the drivers that keep these companies open. This is not the place.

Stay very clear of RoadRunner. Biggest mistake of my career was switching to them as an owner op. I am about to lose my house and everything because they have literally starved my husband and I.
They will lie to you in orientation and tell you they have more freight than drivers and when you get to a terminal you tell them where you want to go.
Well first off let me give you the true insight:
    - the trailers are not closed out unless it is 100% max capacity filled. LTL is no true here. The average load is 35k or more.
    - even if you are scheduled for the load and are a team they WILL NOT close out trailer if it's not full until they load a few more pallets on THE NEXT NIGHT! Yes you sit there all night and all the following day.
    - If you are sitting at a terminal FORGET about a broker load. They will never approve you.
    - 1st broker load RRTS take out 6%, 2nd broker load they take out 12%, third they take out 18%, 4th they take out 24% and so on.
    - terminals barely have enough freight to keep anyone rolling.
-DESPITE WHAT TRAILERS SAY IN ADDS AND TERMINALS TELL YOU THERE ARE NO DEDICATED LANES HERE!!! The main operations manager will not even help you out here if you are promised a dedicated lane.
    - $210 A WEEK TO BE IN TRAILER POOL which allows you to drop and hook trailers at terminals!!! And the trailers are NOT MAINTAINED. They argue about replacing illegal tires. And HOLES IN EVERY CEILING OF TRAILER because they load freight to the cieling. Also be careful opening doors because a pallet stacked sideways on top on a fragile box will fall on you. It's happened more times than I can count.
    - you will have a load and deliver on time, to sit for about 2-3 days to get your next. Especially if you are team. You won't get any more than 5500 miles a week if your lucky at $1 a mile or less.

LIARS WHO ONLY CARE ABOUT THEMESLEVES! So many hidden deductions. This wasn't even everything... But stay away. I am leaving here after ruining my career for the last 6 months!!

Roadrunner does one thing very well. They take a great company and run it into the ground, driving off the good drivers and office personnel and replacing them with idiots and dimwits.

RR was a good company before they became greedy..... Use to be like this:

We could run broker freight anytime you wanted(of course you know on broker loads they don't advance fuel money so you had to get it from the broker or front your own money) Your 1st 3 broker loads you received %96 then for every one after they took and extra percent each time UNTIL you pulled a Terminal load then it reset again to %96 etc......... We had it great then!! I live in NC and loved going to Milwaukee and pulling a terminal load to one of the Los Angeles or Portland terminals. I would ask a day in advance and the terminal would tell me come on in and drop my trailer after delivering in the area and they would load me that evening.

I remember one time I was in Commerce Ca and at the time the truckload/broker load division had literally just started(2007 I think) Some one from RR found me a load from Rialto CA to Winston-Salem NC....(I remember it was a CR England brokerage load) I picked it up late Monday afternoon and I had to deliver to Fed Ex in Winston-Salem Thursday morning!! I live about 20 miles from Winston at the time and I was home about 5pm Wednesday after noon....

Those were the days......Now its an investor driven industry.....all about pleasing the investors.
