Firestick makes a great 2 meter antenna that looks just like a cb antenna and uses a 3/8 stud mount. If you're going to run hf I think ham sticks use 3/8 too.
For everything else I recommend using nmo mounts. Vhf and uhf antennas are plentiful using this mount and I use an nmo mirror mount on my truck. If you need to use an antenna other than nmo there are all kinds of adapters. Nmo to uhf, even nmo to 3/8 stud.

Thanks, that's where I'm at right now. Will use dxelectronics or gigaparts. DX looks to have more odds and ends. I saw hear of the hamsticks, but was going with a dual band antenna. Just was trying to get the mount system sorted. Need to order this weekend so I'll have it the day I pass! I just need to remember the General band plan. I'll pass the technician license just fine. I just want that General first try. Sorry, I'm pumped!

Check out ham radio outlet as well. Also look to see who charges you state tax and who doesn't. Some do some don't. It could save you a lot of money on big purchases
rabbiporkchop and darthanubis Thank this. -
I did it!
Got my General ticket! They say I should be in the FCC database in a week. I did well on the technician license, and barely passed the general, bombed the extra. They talked me into taking the extra. I could only guess at those questions having never studied for that level.
I'm sending my antenna, adapter and cable back to get nmo replacements. I should have those today. I've hooked to radio to power to go through the menu system. It seems like a well built rig. Came with a long remote cord for the display which was nice. I didn't hook up the mic because I didn't want to accidentally key without an antenna hooked up! But hopefully, I'll have it mounted and be able to listen until I can key. I was hoping I'd have a callsign the same day. But , heck, I have real talking privileges. I guess now I need to be on the hunt for a used HF mobile all band. Maybe I'll just actually use my big radios 10 meter band!
All the guys were super friendly and welcomed me to the hobby. It was a great experience. There was one guy there testing for his technicians, and the rest were upgrading to General. Everyone got what they came for.
Well, I'll post when I'm up and running.

Congrats!
My call sign was in the database within 48 hours. It took me almost a week to find it though because they spelled my last name wrong. Transposed two letters. Still haven't gotten it fixed. I figure I'll submit the change when I go for my general. So if you can't find it search your address like I did.
Not sure what 10 meter radio you have but if it's one that had to be converted like and export chances are it won't cover much of the 10 meter band and it will need Ssb to talk to others on the band. Needs fm to get into 10 meter repeaters and be capable of doing the split freq. not to mention ctcss for some repeaters. not many can do all that.
I looked at used hf rigs when I was getting started. Some look really sketchy. For about $600 you can get a basic new hf rig if you look around and catch a sale.

KM4GNNdarthanubis Thanks this. -
Good job. For the prices I am also leery of used all mode HF rigs. Prices used for a used 706 mk2 G like I have run over $600 and do not cover some of the newer modes without modifications.

I've got the Stryker 955. It has ssb, fm, and I have the full range. I didn't think I'd do any repeater work with it, just some ssb/fm simplex and shoot some dx. I know conditions are poor for 10 meters currently, but just something to fool around with until I get a proper HF rig. I really want to try to work 20m.

10 meter conditions ...
They're poor?
Really?
Well congrats! -
Really what?
Are you attempting to communicate something by not actually communicating anything, again?
I'm referencing calculate hf propagation for the band using solar information for the 12-10m band. What are you referencing, anything other than your anecdotal evidence you so often admonish @rabbiporkchop for using? -
I like the 955. Only thing I don't like about it is it will take a ctcss board but won't do split freqs.
