No I was in a hurry and had to leave, didn't want to make a big deal out of it, but it was funny to see that the band conditions are so poor while I have been make a bunch of good contacts lately.

By the way, congrats. What do you think you missed in the extra?

Welcome to the ham world. If you ever win the lottery you should get one of these microphones.
Then you can learn the true meaning of expensive

I missed more than 50% of the extra test , so missed it all. But that's good to hear about the 10m conditions. I'll be able to talk.

    It wasn't a good day for 10 .... But ...

I scored today with an $1100 purchase at a garage sale so it wasn't all that bad. We moved three pickup truck loads of stuff out of this place and have to return for another 6 loads. I also have to rent a trailer and maybe a forklift to get some of the large things out of there. I got a call from one of my wife's friends who's neighbor was in the hospital and his daughter was told to clean the house out. I got there at 11 and no one was really there except a group of guys looking for audio stuff and tubes. I bought the entire ham, radio and parts from the lady for what number she came up with, told the audio guys I'm not selling my stuff and loaded up the truck. Just as I was finished, she asked me when I will come back for the rest. I asked rest, and she said the pole barn and the stuff behind everything in the garage which I didn't see at all until she showed me. I had to hire someone to help, we got three loads out of there tomorrow with I think another 6 left, plus I may need a forklift to get the big stuff.

Before you all think it is great, it isn't because I will run out of storage room with this purchase. It isn't well organized either so if I am looking for those new 4-400a tubes in saw somewhere, I will have to go through everything. That's the bad news, the good news is this guy kept everything he used or bought from the time he got his ticket in 1952 to the time he let his license expire in 2009.

Well, the worst part so far is waiting to see my name appear in the FCC database. The up side to the waiting is it's forcing me to just listen first instead of blab. I'm getting to understand how the radio works, read the manual, and understand more about how repeaters work. I've found a few repeaters and just listen to guys talk. Figured out how to use my scan mode, and just scan while driving. Picked up, a tow truck company and a taxi service in NJ on 150+ mhz. I only heard one conversation on 70cm. Looks like my radio covers 1.25cm and some of 33cm frequency wise. I also get weather bands. The APRS receive does tie up the radio, but I suppose those stations popping up I could talk with. Don't really know as I have to rights to key yet.

I'm afraid those old guys submitted our exams using USPS instead of electronically submitting them. Ugh.

Check out repeaterbook.com (they have apps for iOS and android) for repeater info.

Radioreference.com has a lot of info including police and govt freqs and registered business freqs.

Yep it is one of two deals I've run across last week. The amazing thing is until 10 or so years ago, I've always was the last to know. It seems being in the right place at the right time.

I just got home after moving all of the stuff out of the house and into the storage unit. I started yesterday and had to hire three guys to help out plus rent a trailer. Just moved it because don't even know where to start. The books alone came to four large totes. I discovered some of the wooden crates were filled with all kinds of military stuff this morning, so that's alone is a weeks worth of work figuring out what it is. There are so many tubes I have to buy a new tube checker to get them all checked. I counted three crates of CBs (like I need more) and a few crates of commercial radios converted to two meter radios.

The catch out of it so far is the radio sets that are packed in it, I didn't expect to find any of it but it was in crates.

I'm thinking that maybe next year I will start working on the pile, just so much there.

The other one I let my buddy get, I found a moving sale in the same area, the owner had a lot of ham equipment. He took the day off (which he said pissed his boss off so much he told him to find another job), got there at 8 am (it opened at 10) and he was first into the house. He made a deal with the owner and got 17 crates of ham equipment from parts to radios for $700. The people clamboring to get into the room with the radio stuff he said was unreal. He ended up with some high power amps, a lot of amp parts (and a lot of commercial broadcast tubes), and some unique test equipment. He had to make two trips with his truck, got the expensive stuff out the first trip, got home to find his wife broke her wrist and had to take her to the ER. He returned yesterday to find some POS went through what was covered and marked as sold, stole a couple HV transformers and a bunch of HV caps, he was not happy. He got some unique things out of it, and he most likely won't be selling much of it.
