I heard that joke about a million times when I worked for FedEx... it got tired after a while. LOL. That and people always asking me if I saw Castaway.

K Williams can you explain what it means to "buy a route".
I've not had experience with that sort of freight ops. -

The driver selects/is given a certain area that they would like to do pick-ups and deliveries and has to purchase that area. That's how it was when FedEx Ground first started. They also have to buy/lease their own truck, pay for maintenance, etc. The guys that worked midtown Manhattan did pretty good salary wise... They drove straight rigs or oversize Freightliner step-up vans.

When I worked for RPS years ago.IF anyone remembers, RPS was a sister company of FEDEX. The union hated us. I hired straight on as a driver. Drivers usually had to purchase the route from the previous driver. I was lucky because the route I had, the guy quit. All the routes were local. Normally, I had 75-150 stops a day. I started around 6-6:30am and didn't finish til 5-6pm. I ran my hinny off. The money was great but #### some days were pure hell. I leased a straight truck, paid for insurance and all maintenance.
Baack Thanks this. -
RPS became FedEx Ground. The Teamsters made me sit for hours one day at Jacob Javitz Convention Center. LOL. I DEXed the whole truck and came back to the the station.
If I had known I would have applied to UPS instead. Working for FedEx isn't what you think... at least not in big cities. Screw all those nice cozy FedEx commercials. LOL. Doesn't matter anymore. I'm in a job I love now.

"purchase that area/route" whiz on that!
What kind of money are we talking about? I can usually find work without paying MY money for the privilege of working for some one. Just like a union job. -
I used to work for FedEx (freight) till I got FedUp. It used to be the best when it was American Freightways but after FedEx took over it went down hill big time for the driver.

RPS was Roadway Package Service . It became FedEx Ground when FedEx bought it from Roadway . Because of O/O's winning suits classifying them as employees , not independent contractors FedEx will no longer sell single routes . An O/O with multiple routes won't be classified as an employee .
DHL is the same way . The only sell multiple routes but employees driving those routes ratified a Teamster contract a few months ago . Thousands of DHL employees have lost their jobs since then. DHL contracted out air shipping to UPS .
