Home everyday?

I think it all depends on who you work for and what type of loads they're hauling, I personally have one of those jobs where I am home every day, I work all nights also

 

There is lots of local work all over the place. Dump trucks cement mixers local delivery log haulers auto parts haulers fuel delivery milk pickup the list goes on. It's out there.

 

We did concrete mixers all the time locally just down the road from home, In fact I would drive a concrete mixer, the oldest in the fleet like either a Mack or autocar or something then walk over to the plant's Cat 936 front end loader and start feeding 6 yards of rock and sand for the day.

In the summer time the heat became a killer. At that point everyone switches to night ops. And sleep all over the office trailer, outside in the rock or sand pile etc until they are called all on time and half over time.

Further back we did bulk tanker. Meaning preloaded in Lime Kiln Maryland one afternoon, drop in company yard at New Market Maryland that night, drive home, get up drive back get in tanker trailer truck and go deliver to silo anywhere up to 250+ miles radius. At that time I-270 was under construction as was a number near the Pentagon in Arlington, that recieved the bulk of our Cement. You drove until they said enough later in the day. Sometimes they sent you to Union Bridge to work with the railroad locomotive hauling out cement inside that building for the silos all around. Sometimes they sent you to the Port of Baltimore to load cement portland off a ship docked direct. It all depends who has the load needed where.

Same thing with day cab flatbedding. You got loaded wherever there was a load to do, tarping too. 3 times a day in 16 hours. Run all over the place. Or run dedicated with a railroad loading Lowes wood on your deck in the morning. Off you go. My speciality during that winter was delivering to a major building supply store not later than 8 Am over three mountain ridges near Altoona Ice is not a excuse to stay home. You went. Don't wreck.

 

I work from 4pm to 4-6mm. I like the nights for the traffic but hate having the dotted white line as my only scenery. Sleeping sucks for me bu I manage

 

There are many jobs out there which are short distant. I've been doing short distant hauling of late. I've heard of, long trips you do in the U.S.

 

I'm away for about 6 to 7 hours a day, 5 days a week. Weekends, I'm free which I utilize for other things.
