Do you know what's better than winning the Gold medal at the Special Olympics?

My own situation by defination is Handicapped. However... I use a variety of tools to erase that and meet the Medical requirements of trucking. I did not cotton to people telling me what I can and cannot do, least of all Bosses who think I should not be able to have done what I have done in life or am doing in his yard with one of his trucks with the issues (Discrimination) overlooking the fact that I was doing it very well at that time of the year.

Satellite communications was the liberator. No more telephone ######## inside the truckstop. Then Cell Phone nationwide. Huge amounts of time was lost in those days prior to the Cell and Satcom. Then bring in the internet and finally the GPS direct to the cab along with the ability to use a computer to patch into the truck etc.

Fast forward to today. I'll still truck. On pure experience, gumption and moxie no problem. What will be a problem is after the day based on certain issues with me which do not qualify for a Medical card, so thus Im off the road. The way things are going in many cases with the closures of many of my haunts and company policies which are bordering on what I would call overmicromanagement Im happy to be off the road.

No one is offended that I know of. Least of all me. I was raised by the State in a new Deaf School in Maryland back in the 70's, transferred to public school which was a education in and of itself and then finished my years back in the high school deaf side. The alternative was to spend a life time in a rubber room at a funny farm. So the life I have had and being able to do everything I desired to do including learning to fly a little bit and navigating better than I fly (Too ham fisted, the little planes would bounce too much. I need to have something heavy on the touch hence my handle)

There are people in my school who will never have the life I have had, they will never own a home and land. They will never truck or many things. I think of them all the time. It is my hope that whatever life has for them has been a peaceful one.

With that said, handicaps in trucking is not too common. But people overcome them and if they do it very well it's hardly noticeable. THAT I think is the best anyone can do out there on the big road.

you will NOT however, see truckers with handicapped tags. If I ever saw one I'll eat my hat.
