Want to be a contractor

You can buy a route. Just google fedex routes for sale or something sinilar.
Or start slow and buy a truck and try leasing on with them. Maybe you won't like owning a truck, but you will learn

 

First of all, you HAVE to be incorporated. Fed Ex does not contract without it. If you can get started with one truck, plan on running a team. You already are in Fed Ex Ground's system. Ask the person who contracts with companies at your terminal about getting started. Might be a good idea to start an account with Ryder or Penske. Some contractors just lease their trucks and do not own them. You may need a rental truck if something happens to yours, accident, breakdown, etc.

 

Just to add onto what the other posters have said, you need to have 2 trucks now to get started in Fed Ex Ground. They are looking to phase out single truck owner operators from what I understand. The good news is your in Fed Ex, so take advantage of that. Look out for growth opportunities, these are a "no cost" way to get into the company. These growth opportunities are usually for the unassigned rotation board. You will also need an RFI ( a business plan).

As far as the contractor you currently work for, I would be open and honest. This is exactly what my husband and I did. He worked for a wonderful contractor but was honest from the beginning that his goal was to become a contractor. When the time came that we were ready and all the stars alligned, he gave them 2 months notice, so they would have ample time to find a new driver. They've also been tremendously helpful in answering questions as we've gone forward. I wouldn't want it any other way, especially since you see all the contractors in your contractor forums and I wouldnt want any awkwardness. I hope this helps! Good luck!

 

I had this conversation with my contractor before he sold out.

You need a minimum of two trucks. Better to start with three (per my contractor). Starting out you will have to run OTR team routes until you accrue enough points to buy a solo run or more team runs.

You have to install Lytx DriveCams by 08/01/2017 and jump through all kinds of hoops for FXG.

If your trucks break down you lose points. Service failure you lose points. Etc.

Your drivers dont get paid when FXG's trailers and dollies break down and you dont earn points back. FXG runs over their contractors like you wouldnt believe.
