You mentioned you're using a trk gps,i hope you're still reading your signs, your surroundings and glance at an atlas.Port of entry sign can be hard to spot.I would look at your atlas so you know where they are.All of west coast is port of entries.Don't know why they call it that rather then weigh station. You can also pretty much plan on most of them to be open 24/7.
30 minute break does not stop 14 hour clock...

Not accurate, a company can have OTR drivers on 8 day/ 70 hrs and at the same time local driver on 7 day/ 60 hrs staying within
100 air miles. All one company one MC#. Did for twenty five years hauling cars. -
The funny thing about the SD port of entry was that I had checked the MN page of rand McNally and I could see I 90 did not have a port of entry at the Mn/Sd border. But afterwards I checked the Sd page and it did show the port of entry on the Sd side. So I learned I have to check every page for each state as the map publisher shows the border state roads, but it does not show weigh scales in the border states. Unfortunate there is no notice of that at the beginning of the atlas.

Wyoming, in that two page state I swear they have more weigh stations then TX.
-
And unlike texas, they actually use them. In 21 years of running trucks the only texas scale i have ever seen open is the one on 45 just south of Dallas.Getsinyourblood Thanks this.

A overnight hotel room breaks the 14 hour clock, and a few hours more resets your 70 if I understand the laws correctly.

Wyoming is not too much of a problem. They have a entry not far west of Fort Bridger and another entry inside town in Sheridan across the street from the truckstop and a third if memory serves up in the Cabbage.
They use the scales and they are OPEN most of the time unlike the majority of states in the Union. Wyoming has been good to me. No problems because generally my loads are passing through billed and ladeled for some other state delivery. -
45 is that one scale towards Houston? That's that one i've seen open. But lucky for me I was always on the opposite side or drive past there before 5 am just before they open.
-
I've never had a problem with WY,they just always wanted to see my permit book.

keeping it simple - 10 hour break stops the 14 hour clock.
you cannot drive after 8 hours of on duty time without taking a 30 minute off duty break. When you take the break is up to you. Don't take it too early ( or you may have to take a second one) and don't wait to the last second (you may be stuck in traffic). To qualify for the 16 hour exemption, you must have started and returned to the same location, your 5 previous tours of duty. Been released from duty before 16 hours. You can only use the 16 hour exemption once in a 7 day period. FMCSA 395.2 Part oupnorthwpg and Pumpkin Oval Head Thank this.
