I'm currently in CDL school and the other day we watched a Discovery Channel episode called Highway Pirates about this subject. Mainly about a task force called Cargo CATS(Criminal Apprehension Team/s).
On my way to school the very next day the news on the car radio said a trucker was just hijacked in LA overnight. I thought wow that was timely. And it seems the level of violence against truckers to steal their load is increasing. This truckdriver was not harmed but a gun in the face is not pleasent none the less.
A couple of things I am curious about...
The US Constitution gives citizens the right to bear arms.
Since the Government regulates every aspect of the truck industry especially getting special endorsements such as Hazmat, Tankers, Doubles Triples etc.
Why can't a truck driver get a gun endorsement from the Feds that authorizes nationwide carry? Something that would validate your knowledge in handling a firearm in much the same way as the 80,000 lb. rolling one. It would be better than carrying illegal which if caught I understand in the wrong jurisdiction would be a felony.
If hijackers and criminals knew the driver in the cab was sleeping and armed they might just think to move on. It seems to me the criminal element knows that most if not the vast majority of drivers cannot carry so it's like shooting fish in a barrel for them. That way when they smash your window with a tire iron you can answer back from your bunk with a little lead of your own. -
Cargo theft/hijacking is rarely committed by one individual. Having a firearm in the cab might give the driver the ability to pick off one or two perps. But the perps are most likely armed and numerous.Roadmedic Thanks this.

There are no federal laws prohibiting carrying a gun in a commercial vehicle. But the problem for many is twofold:
1) There are some commie states such as Kal, Ill, NY/NJ, among others, that have a trmendous amount of gun kuntrol laws, thus making it illegal to carry.
2) From what I hear, most if not all mega carriers explicity prohibit company drivers from carrying a gun in the truck, even where legal.
And for what it's worth, more and more citizens of this country are refusing to follow the enormous amount stupid idiotic laws that these ####### pass as our "represenatives" -
all i have to say is "DO YOU WANT TO TAKE THE CHANCE TO FIND OUT IF I'M A LAW ABIDING CITIZEN WHILE I'M ASLEEP IN MY BUNK" (HOME)???????????????????
