Every enclosed trailer I've seen had the doors at the back of the trailer meaning you had to back into wherever they wanted the product. Nobody backs if there is not a good or practical reason to do so.

Backing, like excrement happens. It's just a part of trucking. What sucks are the idiots that see you are backing up, but they still squeeze through behind you. Bad enough when they are in vehicles, but worse still when they are on foot. There's been more than one fatality when some fool decided he couldn't wait so he walks or runs between the dock and the truck backing in.

Sounds like Tyson. Those yard dogs could care less if youre backing, they will not wait and better make sure to see them rudely get around you otherwise they will turn you in making it out to be your fault.I told a few yard dogs off for that reason.

    Got one better than that.

Not far from here is a fire department located right on a busy 4 lane highway. Every year they have a carnival to raise money.

One year people were parking pretty much all over the place to get to this carnival, causing the pedestrian fatality of one girl trying to walk across the road. A co-worker told me Friday about the two knuckleheads that week who also did that, and were apparently too lazy to walk AROUND his trailer while he was stopped at the red light, so they went UNDER it.

Backing on a public street is a very bad habit. If you have no choice but to do it, DO NOT RELY ONLY ON YOUR MIRRORS TO DETERMINE WETHER THERE IS A VEHICLE BEHIND YOU! - GET OUT AND LOOK! Place cones / Triangles behind your truck to detour traffic, for the complete length of distance that you need to back up, or if you can, get someone to halt cars for you, let the cars go around you first if you can, and wait until there is no traffic approaching you if at all possible. Just know this, if there is a vehicle behind you, with the weight of a Truck, you could possibly back over the top of a car- crushing it and the people inside of it, or especially a motorcycle or pedestrian, and never even hear it or know that it is behind you until it is too late! I know somebody who backed up after only relying on their mirrors ( and was certain that nobody was behind them) and backed into the front of a small car, crushing the front of the car and pushing the car backward for about 100 feet and never even knew that it was behind them. Luckily the trailer had the crash bar hanging down low on the back which kept the trailer from going over the top of the car. It could have been a very ugly situation had that crash bar not been there, especially if there had been a motorcyclist behind the truck rather than that small car. That's my advise to you for what it is worth. YES-A VERY BAD HABIT!

Actually I've seen doors on the front and the sides. But they were specialized trailers.

    MIKE2633 SAID:
Generally actually it's written in our company rules avoid backing if possible, in other words don't do it just to do it. Were not limited we can back as much as we have to, but if we don't have to then don't. Get out and look too, that's what I like to do, best thing you can do.

Why not just ask that to start? I'm sure responses would have been much more relevant. Some companies with a 'no backing' policy have exceptions under certain circumstances. However, most drivers do not meet the requirements for safe backing under the policy, such as having a spotter. In the end, warning signs are an insurance thing more than a safety thing in most cases.

How the hell can you drive a truck in normal trucking, and not have to back? Perhaps some types of trucking don't have to much, but there are still going to be times...
