Hi, I am looking into changing from a company driver to O/O. I would really appreciate hearing from people on there experience with Forward Air.

From what I know, they are 100 percent Owner Operators both Solo and Teams and run freight throughout the night from terminal to terminal primarily. The O/O which I have met were quite satisfied with the company and the compensation. There turn over rate is quite low also for this industry at around 30%.

    Thanks,

    Schneider Pilot

From what I've heard its a lot of sit and wait and then run like hell to deliver a load.
Solo ops will not be given very long runs due to this immediate nature of their freight.
Solo ops will struggle with making money.
Teams will be given the longer gravy runs.

Again this is what I've heard.

  4. I work in a building complex that has a Forward Air terminal in Eagan, MN. It seems like a lot of o/o are sitting around in the lot waiting for work.

Brickman and Big Smitty, appreciate your posts!

They run LTL 53', most runs are at night. Also more senior O/O run dedicated runs between their terminals.

Makes sense this would workout best for a team O/O. Would like to hear from anyone who's worked for them.

my wife and i have worked for forward air for 8 years. ive been an owner op for 15 years. forward air is the best job ive ever had,and the most money ive ever made.its all drop and hook at our own terminals on our own trailers. so consequently we are treated better at terminals because we all work for the same company. i would not, however, recomend this company to single drivers ,as there are not enough 10 or 11 hour terminals to satisfy the needs of the single drivers we do have. forward air is like all the other companys in that regard, though. as long as the single drivers keep applying, they will keep on hiring. that is the largest portion of our abnormaly low turnover.(single drivers)i just bought my 3rd new truck since starting with these folks in 2000. at the risk of sounding like a recruiter,i can honestly say i,and my wife love our job.i must also add that they are quite diffacult to get hired on with. the hiring parameters are alot more stringent than some companys that hire anyone with a hearbeat and a truck payment.no job hoppers,no speeders, no slackers(they expect teams to run like teams) no excuses. they trust us to use good judgement but do everything possible to be ontime with the loads. to whom much is given ,much is expected. hope i didnt ramble. brad

update !! it has now been 10 years since i started with forward air,and it is still a great job. the only people that seem to quit here are the ones that cant operate as a team.single drivers have much better opportunitys now with the addition of a couple of other forward air divisions.the way it works here is you sleep all day and run your ### off at night. i think its the best of all worlds. driving at night is when the least amount of traffic is on the roads.my wife and i have benn doing a dedicated run since shortly after i left my last post in 2008. houston to los angeles and back, twice a week for three weeks then home for three weeks. I LOVE MY JOB!!!

    Hello Brad,
My wife is going to school next Jan and so I have been researching companies for a her and I to team with. Forward Air is one company that interests me. I just talked to a solo driver the other day and he was happy as well. One question I have is, if you sit all day and run all night, how do you and your wife make any miles? or does she not drive? If she does, what are your average miles per week?
Thanks friend and by-the-way, very happy for you, loving where you work is everything.

forward air is not a good place to work, was o/o there , a lot of set time to get loads, and they done really care about there drivers, had problem with my truck and did not have the money to fix all of it, they told me to put it in the shop and they would help me to get it fixed to get back on the road, u know give me a loan on the rest and take it out of my pay. when all was said a done, they back out of that and left me with my truck in the shop with me trying to find out how to get my truck back, so I had to go to work for someone else driving there truck until I can pay it off myself. only had one person try to help me there the rest of them has there head up there ###, plus to many Arabs working there , so over all not a good place for o/o . to many things they take out of your pay for #### you don't need, like I have my own tools and lock kits, but they say you need there's and charge you for them, pay could be better cause you don't get the miles you need , all short runs 200 to 350 miles per load and may be you might get 1200 to 1800 per week, only one week I got 2800, not enuf for o/o to operate on. they will tell you it is a good place to work but it will come back to bite you right in your ###, should have seen that from them having a high rate of drivers not staying very long. there turn over is about 85% per every 3 months , so I guess I live and learn
